NBL All-Star game to be North vs South, on Dec 23

The National Basketball League has announced that due to popular demand its showcase event, the NBL All-Star Game, will return to a North versus South format when it is re-introduced on 23 December this year.

The NBL announced in May that it would hold its first All-Star Game since December 2007 this December as a pre-Christmas classic and recently conducted a poll on its website to determine the fans' preferred choice for the event format.

Fans were given the choice of either 'North versus South’, ‘East versus West’ or ‘Aussies versus Internationals’ in the poll. Over 45% of voters chose the North versus South format which has been used in the majority of previous All-Star events, making it a clear winner with the fans.

For the purposes of team selection for the All-Star Game, the eight NBL teams will be split into two "conferences" of four teams each based on their geographical locations.

In the North conference will be the Cairns Taipans, Townsville Crocodiles, Sydney Kings and Wollongong Hawks. Making up the South will be the New Zealand Breakers, Melbourne Tigers, Perth Wildcats and Adelaide 36ers.

Two teams of ten players each will be chosen for the 2012 NBL All-Star Game, with one side representing the North and one the South.

Fans will be involved in the selection of the teams, with voting details to be announced shortly. The All-Star coaches will be chosen along North and South lines based on the win-loss record of their NBL teams at a predetermined point in the 2012/13 iiNet NBL Championship regular season. Full details of the All-Star selection process will be announced at a later date.

The venue for the rebooted NBL All-Star Game will also be announced in the coming weeks.

They should do it as state or origin but have a number or games across 1 or 2 days culminating in the final game. this way the fans can actually buy into it.
Boost the team numbers with young fellas so that way they can show their skills and will make for a decent game as the NBLers wont wont to get shown up....
VIC would probably win but would be good to see all the SA guys together, players would probably enjoy catching up with guys they played against in school/district/state etc.

I think being a showcase exhibition game, it will be far from a blowout. South will be taking it easy while North will be playing hard so the end result will be somewhere in the middle.

Anyone care to take a stab at the starting lines ups for both teams based on current rosters?

South
C: Schenscher
F: Redhage (Maybe DJ)
F: Abercrombie
G: Lisch
G: Gibson (Jackson if he returns)

North
C: Crosswhite
F: Tragardh
F: Crawford
G: Wilson
G: Henry

North will be a bit hard to decide because Wollongong & Townsville haven't signed their imports yet.

Should also have the restriction that there must be at least 4 Aussie-born in each team.

While it might please the fans to have each team made up entirely of imports & foreign-born players, it wouldn't help the league develop its potential Boomers.

The All Star game is certainly not a developer for future Boomers anyway.

Also, there's no way either team would have more than 6 imports with or without restrictions.

Local players are every bit as good as imports these days anyway. In fact, in the upper echelon of the league, they always have been. Look at the early 90s All Star game lineups - wasn't all imports by any stretch.

North could have DeLeon if he signs with the Hawks. Hopefully he will!

91 All Star game was an American show. Aussies were Gaze, Borner, Heal, Parkinson, Keogh and maybe one more.

89 had Gaze, Keogh, Carroll, Smyth, Johnson, Ellis, Heal, McKay, Joyce and maybe one other but there might have quotas that year because apart from Gaze, Smyth and Johnson those guys werent stars.

What would the All Star teams have been last year? Harder to pick with only 9 teams, and only 8 this year.

North - Schenscher, Khazzouh, Grant, Forman (token Hawk), Worthington, Crawford, Gibson, Deleon, Wilson, Gill

South - Wilkinson, Johnson, Tragardh, Simpson, Wagstaff, Abercrombie, Lisch, Jackson, Ubaka, Martin

Hopefully the big imports this year are good dunkers. And they should just pick Lucas Walker in the All Star game for entertainments sake.
