Australian NCAA team

I was just having a think, and was wondering if it is possible for Australia to form a partnership with a college in America and run its entire basketball programme with Australian talent.

Everything would run as normal school wise except Basketball Australia would run the basketball team to develop its talent. Australian Coaches, and players. Sort of a continuation of the AIS but playing against American Schools in America.

It would only really be relevant to guys who arent talented or well-known enough to get a regular college gig. The key thing would be getting an educational institution to partner with. Would have to be one without a current basketball program. Also then you have the hurdle of getting the NCAA to approve it.

It probably wouldn't make sense for the college, really, financially.

Plus, I think there are enormous benefits from going overseas and playing under a traditional American college system with an American coach and being surrounded by American players, which wouldnt happen if the program was run by BA.

Still, it's an interesting thought.

Something that is more achievable in the interim thatI would like to see is exhibition hitouts of AIS or young aussie national teams against top USA college outfits.

Challenge to someone - what's the best Team which could be created from current NCAA players.

Obviously Della and Motum would start ... but who else?

A better idea would be an AIS team that gives guys degrees playing in the NBL, if they leave to join an opposition team before the 3 years period, they don't get their degree.
They could share their home games between Canberra and newcastle.

we have some american colleges with annexes here - but your idea is too far off the richter scale - more so the travel content.

rather see our uni teams get better and tour.

Would be a good idea if BA wasn't running the program. The best coaches are located in the USA, that't why most kids try to get a scholarship to play there.

Thanks, Anon #933

Do you reckon that 'team' would be good enough to make the NCAA finals?

Prossibly could be a top 10 team. There's a weakness at the center position however rumor has it that Hodgson will be a productive player this season.

Excellent class anyway you look at it.

Apart from the success of Delly at the London games, and the fact that Broekhoff was probably the one of the last two guys cut from that team, Brock Motum was a shining light for Washington State on their recent tour of Australia, including a 41 point outing against Cairns!

Also, fellow Aussie centre continues to improve as he has been starring for Oregon State on their current tour of Europe with still one game to go...he is so far averaging 15 points and 10.3 rebounds with two double-doubles in the Beavers' three straight wins.
