NH: Sydney FC Sign Italian Legend Del Piero

Sydney FC have pulled of a big coup in the signing of Del Piero for 2 yrs. It has been reported he turned down Liverpool for a 2 season deal worth approx $2 mill per season with Sydney.

At 37 is he worth that sort or money. He will obviously attract more fans and maybe corporate sponsors but will the club get a return on their investment? What are peoples thoughts?

Off the pitch will be massive. 10x the player Dwight Yorke was at his peak and look at the interest he drew while here. Plus there are so many more Italians in Sydney then jamaicans so he correlates more with their demographic.
On the pitch - if Liverpool were interested he can prob handle the a-league haha

The A League seem to have an endless pit of money. Didn't their clubs lose a collective $30 mill last year? How can Sydney FC possibly afford him! Isn't there a salary cap in the A League or is this a marquee player signing which is outside of the salary cap? If so, the marquee player rule will send clubs broke! He'd just about be the highest paid player in Australian sport.

Good for them, and good for their fans, but when are they going to be a bit more frugal about their spending?? It seems out of control with signings like these.

I reckon 3rd party deals and being Sydney will help get the 2 million+ in Del Piero salary + hopefully filled venues to see him.

The filled venues bit is the key - their stadiums are massive. All their clubs have been unable to go close to filling their stadiums, can't see this being any different even with this huge signing. Sydney will draw bigger crowds to their away games, but I imagine once the hype has settled down, the crowds will drop again. Remember they had Kewell and Emerton last season and their impact off the field wasn't that impressive after the hype wore off.

Del Piero was one of the best soccer players in the world in his prime. He was worth about 20 million if he took the Real Madrid deal.

At least Sydney FC has the opportunity to recruit a classy European guy. Sadly even if a club in the NBL managed to sign a big name ex-NBA player it would probably be some wannabe thug type with an embarassing posse in stride.
