S A Basketball Drifting or Shipwrecked ?
We built the best stadium (arguably) in the country back in 1991 and we were flying with the Sixers and the Lightning through the nineties only to have short-sightedness and self interest steer basketball onto the rocks in the decades of the new century. Blame BASA but to recast BASA as BSA and change almost nothing is negligent.
Where are we at? Has BSA been even one percent more effective than its predecessor BASA? Junior basketball is the life blood of the sport, the audience for the future and one that needs to be nourished and nurtured to maturity by a competent parent body. Mum and Dad seem to be problem gamblers and the baby is locked in the car on a 40 degree day, suffocating.
Too many clubs with not enough players and just a few clubs with too many player. Administrators of the game caught in the headlights fearful to make rules that might help an injured game. There is no competition in junior girls district and precious little in abl women and to ignore the plight of the girls is to risk the sport not being played by enough women in the very near future.
If the number of clubs remains the same then the farce that masquerades as a competition will be further diminished. Make some changes soon. How long will BSA allow clubs to function without being able to field teams. How many more clubs will they admit into the competition before they realise they are killing the goose? If BSA is hamstrung by existing rules then ways around it need to be found.
