There's been a few threads on this already - this one from last year has a lot of good suggestions.

I hate Bill Simmons normally but his book (book of basketball) is really good.

The Golden Boys; about the 92 Barcelona squad. A chapter on each player and where they came from. First great basketball book I ever read.
Generally regarded as the finest basketball book ever written is The Breaks of the Game by David Halberstam. The book is on the Trail Blazers in the 79/80 season; but it also delves into the league and a lot of the top players in it at that time. Fantastic book, can't recommend it highly enough. Simmons Book of Basketball is also very good in my opinion. Pacific rims is an interesting take on basketball in the Philippines and a young Americans guy travels through it
