Winston Garland, 'sixth man'

Crazy but brilliant story about the time in 1993 when Winston Garland came onto the court as an illegal sixth man for the closing moments of a playoff game:

In the biggest moment of the year, with Houston's season and possibly Hakeem Olajuwon’s legacy on the line, this backup shooting guard just walked right onto the court. He did not wait for a dead ball. He did not wait for a coach's instruction. He did not check in at the scorers table. He did not even wait for a teammate to sub out.

He just waltzed onto the floor, an errant sixth man, joining the battle in defiance of every rule and structure that governs the game.

Quite bizarre. Seems very purposeful when he walks to that spot and kneels, and then when he enters the court.

Even Scott Brooks walked onto the court as the game was still being played. He effectively became a 'seventh man' but doesn't become as engaged as Garland.

Looks pretty crowded down that end of the court, wonder if it happened quite a bit at the Seattle Center Coliseum. Be interesting to view other clips of close finals games at the Coliseum.

To me it looks like Garland is crouching down so not to obscure the view for spectators in the first few rows.

Thanks for the trip back down memory lane, that was an entertaining Sonics line up and weren't the Rockets a solid list too with Hakeem as its centrepiece.
