SANFL's financial troubles

Article in the Messenger. On iPad so will paraphrase a few parts.

Sturt's 2012 loss was $447k. Bank debt $2.66m. West Adelaide lost $505k.

From the AFL, the SANFL gets game development money plus $1m to split amongst its league and amateur/country clubs which produce draftees. Each SANFL club gets $400k from annual Crows/Power licenses.

Clubs get $20k for producing an AFL draftee and an extra $15k if they reach 20 games.

And all this with pokie money propping up a few.

Seven out of the nine SANFL clubs made a loss. The clubs mentioned "face extinction within two years". Each gets home crowds of about 2,500.

AFL is quoted as saying they have no plans to adjust the payments heading down the chain towards the SANFL. Sturt CEO had proposed $90k payment per draftee.

Unfortunately the SANFL was never the same once the Crows entered the AFL.

Really, the SANFL and its clubs have to cut down player payments to make sure the competition survives. There's no reason the competition shouldnt be viable given the level of support it receives.

Why keep spending on excessive player payments when you dont have the money. Its becoming an arms race at all sporting levels.

Because they have to. Previous article speaks about the decline of the competition. How Vic and WA are on par now. How players are leaving the SANFL for more money in Country leagues.

SANFL clubs have spend way to much for a long period....they need to look more at structures to attract players with jobs/lifestyle and future AFL oppurtunties rather than just cash in the hand as it just creates a debt cycle that they can't escape!

Scary thing it the SANFL is better supported than the VFL in terms of specator support & local sponsorship but its all about keeping up with the other cashed up clubs.

For people talking about player payments being too high in the SANFL that is rubbish. Like a former player said why would you train 5 days a week and get paid around $75 a game in the reserves when you can go out to the country train once a week and get around $1000 a game.

It's why so many guys in their 20's retire from the SANFL these days. If you're not going to make the AFL you need to do the best by your young family.

The Crows then Power really killed the SANFL but since then due to teams not being able to pay players much the cashed up sponsors in country league have really sunk the boot in.

You play in the reserves to make it in the seniors. If you cant make seniors then go and play country.

Having said that, the issue is not reserves payments! The SANFL simply need to find a sound level of player payments so it can survive. By the time we get to the bottom of the GFC they will have a lot of other leagues for company.
