Two well-known Geelong basketball identities have been appointed to key developmental coaching positions with the Supercats.

It follows the resignation of Victorian Youth Championship women's coach Grantley Bernard and under 18 girls mentor Zoe Duggan last week.

Kylie Morrissy, who just last week was ruled out of the 2013 SEABL season with an ongoing knee injury, will take up her first Head Coaching role with Geelong, leading the under 18 girls in the Victorian Championship division of the Victorian Junior Basketball League.

Having been named the Supercats captain for a third season earlier in the year, Morrissy will now focus her efforts on the development of the next wave of Geelong players by lending her vast experience to a talented group.

Supercats CEO Andrew Scotford said he was strongly encouraged by Morrissy’s decision.

"Coming off a difficult week, where she discovered she would not be able to play in 2013, Kylie has made a decision that just reminds us what a quality person she is, showing her passion for the Supercats and Basketball Geelong," he said.

“While her leadership on court will be missed, she continues to make a huge contribution off court.”

Another familiar face will now lead the Geelong women’s team in the reformed Molten Victorian Youth Championship competition, which gets underway this weekend at Frankston.

Col Darrington, who has coached thousands of representative players in a coaching career spanning four decades with Geelong.

“Col has no need to establish his credentials as a coach,” Scotford said.

“Our association Coach of the Year award was named in his honour four years ago, and he is held in the highest regard around Victoria”.

A life member of Basketball Geelong, Darrington has previously coached at all levels of Geelong representative basketball, from juniors through to seniors and, also coached in the Victoria Country program.

His new team faces a tough opening round of the new competition, taking on Kilsyth on Saturday, followed by a meeting with Nunawading on Sunday March 17.
