Top Australian sports given funding ultimatum

Seven of Australia's top sports have been told to either adhere to mandatory reforms or have their taxpayer funding cut by as much as 20 per cent.

In light of Australia's Olympic woes and revelations about the widespread use of drugs in sport, the Australian Sports Commission has released a list of governance principles.

They focus on three areas - the structural model, composition of the boards and financial transparency.

Last night a letter was sent to the chiefs of swimming, athletics, cycling, hockey, rowing, sailing and basketball - all sports which receive more than $5 million a year - to inform them that they have 12 months to comply with the reforms.

Hopefully all the other sports don't conform, and basketball get their 20% funding that's taken away!

Other sports have been deemed far too lenient on performance-enhancing substances.
