Semi-Final Game 2 Hawks v Wildcats 31 March 2013

No thread on this game yet?

Also on Ten (albeit with some less than friendly viewer audio in the first quarter - and that was before the technical problems).

Best defender (ever??) in the NBL, Damian Martin has gone down with a suspected ruptured achilles. Bad luck for Martin but for once it wasn't a Hawks player going down with a serious injury.

Could this be a series changer. Scores tied at the beginning of the third.

Michael Aylen should just wear a Wildcats playing top the way he is changing the momentum in this game.

You've gotta be kidding, FM? Lisch got manhandled all through the second half, Hire continues to be singled out in 50/50 calls, and Redhage got obviously hammered on a drive.

@BigAds DeLeon looked very proppy in the first half, could hardly run, so did not play in the second half.

Martin going down sort of evened up the injury count - bad luck for Marto, hope it is a calf like the coach tried to claim after the game, but I suspect achilles.

And will everyone please stop whinging about the refs, I just enjoyed watching a tight and tough game of finals basketball, just how it should be.

That's about as intense as it gets. A great playoff game. Well done Wollongong for taking it right up to the Cats. They just would not go away. That's playoff basketball at it's best.

Plenty of drama in this one - will the national media take notice? ;)

Disspointing that only 3000 attended this game. The fans probably thought there was not much point turning up. Pity for them, they missed a great game. Those there made a lot of noise and really got stuck into Lisch, even though it was undeserved :)

Oh and Carfino, it's called Perth Arena, not the Perth Entertainment Centre. Please get the simple things correct.

And if your going to talk about the history of NBL overtime games, it would have been better worth mentioning the 4 overtime game between Perth and Brisbane in 94 rather than some college game your were a part of that no one cares about. But I suspect Carfino (and Joyce) didn't even know about that one since neither were actually involved in it, and bit have little knowledge about the NBL outside of their own experiences...

Wildcat Fan - Might Easter Sunday have had more to do with the low crowd? Seems more likely, given the Hawks' usual level of support regardless of the odds.

I know people that have went to every game of the wildcats regular season but deemed the playoff tickets to be too expensive. Whilst that's crazy logic to me I wonder if hawks fans felt the same way as Joyce mentioned early on (from the horrible audio troubles)

Yeah your right, Easter would have had an effect on the crowd. That and ticket prices. And a live TV broadcast on the east coast. Probably those factors alone would have kept up to 1000 people away.

Did anyone pick up on the out of bounds screen by Matt Knight late in the fourth? The ref was literally within whispering distance of Knight and actually called a defensive foul for roughing up the screener. Anyone?

Momentum and belief...

Wildcats had it at the end when it mattered, Hawks had their chances, but a better game than the Kings Breakers game, which was a bit ho hum IMO.

Still, the final series should be one to watch, looking forward to it, whichever way it goes...

My pick, Wildcats, just!

Semi Finals often draw the lowest NBL crowds of the season and the league needs to examine ways to improve scheduling and reduce ticket prices.

If a screen is set out of bounds, it's an automatic turnover.

Although, I may have been watching too much NBA, can't actually find that rule in the 2012 fiba rules document. I know they call that in America, but now not too sure about internationally. Can someone clear this up?

There is nothing in the rules about setting screens out of bounds.

Should have been 3 seconds call on Knight.

Lisch can't go 2 metres out of bounds in order to get around his player although T for leaving the court is excessive.

You can't set screens to prevent players who have fallen out of bounds getting back in bounds.

You can't gain an advantage by setting a screen inside the keyway for longer than 3 seconds.

Some how out of all that, the young kid gets pinged for a foul for fighting through a moving screen. The simple 100 kg versus 65kg should have highlighted it was a flop by Knight.

Show us the rules that say all that.

There was no "fighting" through a moving screen. He ran straight through him, plain and simple.

33.7 Screening: Legal and illegal
Screening is an attempt to delay or prevent an opponent without the ball from
reaching a desired position on the playing court.
Legal screening is when the player who is screening an opponent:
• Was stationary (inside his cylinder) when contact occurs.
• Had both feet on the floor when contact occurs.
Illegal screening is when the player who is screening an opponent:
• Was moving when contact occurred.
• Did not give sufficient distance in setting a screen outside the field of vision of a
stationary opponent when contact occurred.
• Did not respect the elements of time and distance of an opponent in motion
when contact occurred.
If the screen is set within the field of vision of a stationary opponent (front or lateral), the screener may establish the screen as close to him as he desires, provided there is no contact.
If the screen is set outside the field of vision of a stationary opponent, the screener must permit the opponent to take one (1) normal step towards the screen without making contact.
If the opponent is in motion, the elements of time and distance shall apply. The screener must leave enough space so that the player who is being screened is able to avoid the screen by stopping or changing direction.
The distance required is never less than one (1) and never more than two (2) normal steps.
A player who is legally screened is responsible for any contact with the player who has set the screen.

That's the entire section on screening. It says nothing about players falling out of bounds, and the last line is the reason why the foul was called correctly.

Sounds fair to me, too often players seem to think they can smash into or hit the player setting the screen as they go past!

And it seems to be an issue amongst undisciplined Wollongong guards.

@Bear Also seems like players setting the screen think they can stick out their hips, arse or elbow as the defender runs past.

Actually, not only do they think they can do it, they do do it and don't get called!

Pretty to watch .
Lisch spoiled it a bit . Anyways , later the crowd put him off his game and the refs didn't give him another break .
Hawks plenty of chances to win it in regulation and should have really.

Gordie best coach in the NBL IMO.

Can't believe what he does with his teams, even after he loses a couple starters to major injuries.

Takes a much more talented Perth team to OT, and within a whisker of forcing a Game 3.

Dont get me wrong i love Gordy, but why did he take Demos out when he was all over Lisch and looked like he had him rattled, and makes a big three.
And also on miss matches, why did he leave Oscar on the three point line, every switch he ended up with a guard on him, Post Up!
Been away for Easter just watched the game.
