Adelaide Arena bought by Scouts SA and SA Church Basketball

Boti on Twitter:

SA Scouts & SA Church bball new owners of Adelaide Arena.
From the 36ers site:
Scouts SA and the SA Church Basketball Association have partnered to take recent ownership of the Adelaide Arena, ensuring it remains the home of South Australia's national basketball teams, the Adelaide 36ers and the Adelaide Lightning.

Scouts SA CEO, Dan Ryan said, " We are very excited to be involved with this iconic South Australian Sports Stadium. It is an opportunity to co-brand Scouting with elite national level sport and the family demographic it attracts. We have a close and long term relationship with the 36ers management and very much benefit from this. When the Arena opportunity arose, a strategic decision was made to both broaden our investment portfolio and engage in another commercial fundraising activity."

The Arena will also add a fourth business to Scouts SA’s commercial fundraising activities which include, the Scout Recycling Centre, Woodhouse Activity Centre and their retail stores, Scout Outdoor Centre and Annapurna in Rundle St. “All of this commercial activity exists to financially 'future proof’ our organisation so our South Australian youth can enjoy the benefits and opportunities Scouting provides for at least another 100 years.” said Mr. Ryan

SA Church Basketball Association GM, Fiona Frick said, “We are excited to be involved with Adelaide Arena. The Adelaide Arena is an integral part of the South Australian Basketball Community from elite national level with the Adelaide 36ers and Adelaide Lightning to the beginners of the game.”
We have been concerned for some time that this iconic purpose built stadium might be lost to sport in this state, and particularly basketball.
Scouts and SA Church Basketball have a joint management company that will handle the stadium.

Both ultimately religious organisations FWIW.

Church = worlds largest bank/corporation...

Can't wait for Jesus Christ Bobblehead night!

Great news though. Especially as it could potentially help lower expenses for the club, and boost numbers at games. Not to mention will hopefully get the stadium used more in the community and become a recognised venue again.

As far as these things go, this makes a bit of sense of the Scouts/Church.

Ready-made hall for concerts, youth events, rallies, and all manner of indoor sports.

Would be more affordable than if a business purchased the arena. The Tax breaks that the Scouts and the Church would help.

Congratulations to both the Scouts and SACBA, great for community events and community involvement. It might be true that both are charitable organisations, thus get Tax concessions. That's a plus for management of the Arena and will go along way to running the Arena constructively. As a former Church Basketballer I would hope that SACBA may be able to roster matches at the Arena in the future.

Well Done South Australia!

church and scouts own the place - so they can call the shots - will be a given that church ball will be there IMO.

are we likely to see fri nights / sat morn district juniors back there ?

scouts can have a huge jamboree there - camp on the grounds and meet / speeches etc / cook ups in the stadium.

build some adventure stuff that scouts have on the grounds

It's going to be a money saver for the church and scouts more than a money maker. They no longer will require a hired venue every event, and so on. Owning the property gives them a large asset, tax benefits and less expenditure. They didn't buy it for income weekly, simply for portfolio growth which is great for basketball as they won't need to sell it ever.

This is from the Scouts SA site:
The principles of Scouting are that Scouts should serve God, act in consideration of the needs of others and develop and use their abilities to the betterment of themselves and their families and the community in which they live.
The Scout Promise comes in two flavours, one with a nod to the queen and another for those not so keen on a monarchy. Both have mandatory remarks about a duty to "my God." There is not a version of that "promise" for the irreligious.

Its not a church, its Church Basketball. As far as I am aware it is not affiliated with any church, so to say the church is rolling in money is irrelevant and debatable for another location. The term church like half the English language has a very broad meaning - again irrelevant so I'll stop right there.

I hope the scouts have a busy bee day and clean up the outside of the stadium. Also fix the outside lights and level the pavers to avoid tripping hazzards when leaving in the dark.

Wouldn't it be great for junior basketball if the Adelaide Area/Dome/Powerhouse was once again used for junior basketball on Friday nights. The Country State Champs and the just completed Easter Carnival has showed us all what junior basketball is missing out on.

SA Church Basketball Association home page is at http://www.sportingpulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?c=1-80-0-0-0&sID=255511

Its aims are listed as:

THE AIMS OF SA CHURCH BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

To provide inter-club basketball competition for both male and female members of Clubs, within the City of Adelaide and surrounding districts, as may be affiliated with the Association, in accordance with the restrictions set forth within the Constitution.

Encourage the spirit of comradeship and high ideals in teamwork through basketball.

Assist Churches in the maintenance of the interest and involvement in the wider activities of the Churches by their young members.

Promote the community interest and involvement in Church Basketball and in Basketball generally.

No annual reports that I found (didn't look hard), so no idea about the financial strength of the association.

For the Scouts SA financial side, their 2012 Annual report says "overall turnover exceeded $28m" and refers to contributing $1.45 million to Scouting Operations, of which $440,000 was directed to "property/capital related expenditure".

There might be more detail in the report but that's what I found from a quick skim of the first dozen pages.

Sounds pretty healthy.

Ricey, throughout Australia there are remnant competitions in sport, started by church groups, that now at best have a loose affiliation with those churches.

Melbourne has a Salvation Army Basketball comp, Sydney used to have churches cricket and soccer.

Its a long long time since the "church" ran most of these competitions.

They bought the venue for commercial reasons not personal.

Sure they may use it themselves they are entitled to however they will also use the venue to service other events to raise I home and make the place profitable. It is not a good investment if it is just for their own use.

As for having the money ...... Well they bought it so clearly they have it.

As for the name. They said on radio they are looking for a naming rights sponsor.

Scouts SA has actually transformed itself very well over the years. The recycling centres are the cash cow of the organisation bringing in a strong revenue stream. For them to purchase the Arena, I would expect them to have a pretty good long term vision for the site.

This is good news really. At the very least it means that the 36ers and Lightning don't have any worries about where they'll be playing their home games in the future and that can only be a good thing.

I'm hapy that someone with a basketball focus has made the purchase and thre is no longer any doubts as to where the Sixers and Lightning will play in the future.

Will/do the new owners plan on spending any money on the arena with fixes/upgrades etc?

It is absolutely in our interests for the Arena to be profitable and that means being used as a home and training facility for the 36ers, Lightning as well as any functions it can possibly get its hands on, Scout stuff and social/church basketball. The buyers are organisations who could actually use it really well without really interfering with the welfare of our national basketball teams. 36ers and basketball in general can certainly relate better to Scouts than to ABC Learning Centres with their giant logos it used to have the court.

Hopefully it's constantly used and well utilised!
