JR Smith named NBA's best Sixth Man

And cost the Knicks about $2m this season? Can they afford to keep him next year?

It's NYC, they will be able to afford him. Also have some vets on way out. Knicks next year with a couple role players in mid to late 20s will be set for the next few years. Now if only they could amnesty Amare

Knowing smith he'll probably decline his player 2.9 mil player option. And sign a better contract to some bad team who we'll over pay him(Phoenix?, Detroit etc.)

AFAIK , the Knicks can only pay him up to 175 % of his current salary ($2.8m).

So that means that they can only offer him about $5m.

Another team could offer him more, and he could jump ship just like that.

I think JR has changed a lot, and you can see in his play this year he is more consistent - ties in with the claims that he is partying less and NY isn't getting the best of him this season.

Question is, will teams be willing to throw money at him? Are they scared?

Personally, I think he should be fetching $5m at the minimum.
If he goes well in the playoffs, he could command significantly more in free agency!

Knicks always work around the cap some how. It's really going to come down to, does he want to be a starter and get paid more and win less, or paid decent for few years, win and be the Knicks Ginoboli. If he stays at Knicks and they win the ship, he will be loved by the city for a long time.
