Anybody know the best way to get a 12 month return ticket to the usa when not sure of the return date ?

For ticket prices, try Kayak, Skyscanner, ITA Matrix, etc. Might be able to get a decent one way option.
Otherwise it could be something that a travel agent need help you with. Or call an airline like Virgin and see what they advise.
Book the return leg as a Business class fare. With Virgin Business class is fully refundable, so closer to the time refund it and book a cheaper fare that way.

Book a return flight with a flexi option. You choose a return date, and when you find out when you'll be coming back then you change the booked date. Just go to a travel agent.

Well it's actually not cause my friends kid had the same predicament last year and they rang the college to find out last day of semester and there you have a return date. Of course before you start getting picky , you know when school has finished and you can then organize the return date to suit.
A lot of kids do extra school through summer so they do not have a big work load when the school year starts again so they are not sure till near end of school year. but being such a intelligent person that you are, your friends kids would not need the extra schooling :)

Best to try to get a one-way fare over to the US. We found that the return tickets won't allow you to book 12 months in advance and then sting you when you change the date. Get your best one-way fare over there and then just get return tickets from the US during the college years as the dates will be lock-ins from 6 to 12 weeks depending on the college. They can get access to cheaper return flights to Australia than we can. This worked out cheapest for my son.
