Ben Harvey to NBL?

Harvs is the best coach outta the NBL in my opinion. He's coached over 100 games now for Bendigo & won 72% & seems a great motivator. He was also a winner as a player over 20 yrs in SEABL! If or when Bendigo win title this year could Harvs get an NBL look in?

Quite simply no. He has a great record because his program has a bigger budget than just about everyone else hence he has always had the best cattle. Easy to win when you have the most talent

D4444 its different because the NBL have a salary and a points cap! SEABL is by no means a level playing field! Resources win titles, simple as that.

Resources win titles in every league. You don't really think all NBL clubs are spending the same or even similar amounts, do you?

But they are entitled to and have a limit to what they can spend. Bendigo have more resources than most in the SEABL, compare them to Canberra as an example. Yes resources win titles as I clearly stated but Bendigo can spend and have spent more than most over the years. Has nothing to do with the coach. David Flint's record wouldnt be much different to Ben's.

Regardless of opinions as to who is best coach.

Coaching in SEABL is not really the pathway to the NBL. By all means, it's a great place to cut your teeth and gain experience, but the days of Goorjian, Joyce et al are gone.

Ben would need to gain experience as an assistant coach at NBL level, learn the league, gain credibility with the players before being handed an NBL head coaching position.

What is the win percentage of other coaches (longer term) in the SEABL? Wallace, O'lachlin, etc.?

I'd be interested to know what Runchey's was.

That's very true - look at the lengthy "apprenticeships" served by the likes of Shawn Dennis & Dean Vickerman before getting an NBL head coach gig. I can't see Harvey or anybody else from SEABL getting a HC position without spending a few years working with an established coach.

o'loughlin would have to be higher thought of than Harvey? beat him out for a championship in their first year, better record with junior national teams, similar success on a smaller ( supposed) budget.....

Winning % is a good barometer but not the only one that should be taken into account.

If you talk to other coaches across the leagues know whom the more respected or highly thought of coaches are....you'll note some peoples thoughts might surprise you.

also a good point is Juniors is a totaly differnet beast to mens ball and results at a junior level are a non-factor as being a manager of Egos/budgets/recruitment etc is a different from juniors

Id say Matt Shanahan would have more chance. He seems to pop up everywhere

Shanahan would be a logical choice to step upto the NBL as an AC in 3 or 4 years if he can consolidate himself at Knox.
He is a very astute Basketball person with a tonne of experience in winning programs playing under the best NBL coaches we've ever produced.
Certainly rate him well ahead of the likes of Harvey, Wallace or O'Loughlin

How is this even a relevant debate?

What jobs are up for grabs? Are these guys even interested in NBL? Are we talking assistant coach roles?

Good head coaches don't always make good assistants and vies versa. Much in the same way being a good player doesn't mean you will be a good coach.

Flint won a championship in 1988 as a player coach?
His coaching record is hard to compare vs harveys. If Harvey's playing career equates to his coaching career then it's clear who will win. Currently the Braves are on a 11-0 streak which has never been done by any Braves coach it seems.
