How would andrew gaze go in todays NBA?

just a thought, but how would gaze, in his prime, go if he played in the nba, lets say, next season?

Gaze played no defense, and was notorious for doing so even in an era when NO ONE in australia played any defense.

At the same time, pure shooters who are six foot nine are hard to come by. I say he'd go alright if he came up learning in today's game, ie. where defense is required. But if you transport the 80s Gaze into the NBA today he might struggle. But then again so would many 80s NBA players...

Andrew Gaze, in his prime as you've pointed out, would average at least 15+ppg in today's NBA, or any league, anywhere.

Gaze would still do well in today's NBA era if his role is coming off the bench for some quick shooting.

Might average about 14ppg, but would get 20ppg scored against him.

He would be a very good scorer but his body wouldnt allow him to play big minutes (maybe 20mpg) because of so many games and strength of opponents who could wear him down defensively. Of course, if he guarded the wingman on other team who stands in the corner for lots of teams he could overcome some of that.

"many games and strength of opponents who could wear him down defensively"

Not if he let them have their way it wouldn't.

Easy Mick, he was only 6 ft 7. Still good size for a shooter but not quite Kevin Durant or Peja Stojakovic.

It's astounding that he didn't get drafted after his final game in the NCAA. If you turned in a performance like that now you'd be in the lottery.

I'd say he could easily fill a Mills type role, and if given enough minutes could score well, like he did in the Olympics but as said defense and athleticism could be an issue.

Would definatly be a decent player though, there are plenty worse than him who have played NBA.

Lacks athleticism at NBA level but in his prime would have been a handy 3pt shooting threat off the bench

Would do well sitting in the corner dropping 3's similiar to a Steve Novak type player.

always a role for a Guy like Gaze in todays NBA were shooters are required to spread the floor.

Steve Kerr rings a bell. Also Mick are you talking about his final NCAA game? Wasnt that the final against Michigan were Rumeal Robinson went nuts and Drewey had a poor game? His final four game was the great performance from memory.

Drewey's last game 1-5 for 5 points, 3rebs, 3 ass, 1 st, 3 pf

I think Mick was just talking about his lone season at Seton Hall in general, not just one particular game.

If Drewey had taken strength training seriously would he have been a better player?

Hard to say for sure, but it would be rare for proper strength and conditioning to have a negative impact on a player.

Vart, he averaged 13.6ppg. He has his good games and bad but he was hardly staggering plus back then international players were a huge risk compared to these days

He has the same athleticism as Larry Bird.

Did it worry Larry? Great players always find a way

Im not sure international players were a huge risk, it's just not many NBA teams were prepared to take the risk.

It is the same with AFL clubs recruiting VFL players, all the scouts used to say VFL players werent good enough then all of a sudden they found they were and started recruiting them in much greater numbers.

13.6ppg is a good return for a first year player in a new system who wasn't even the teams first option on offense. If an international player did the same thing today that Gaze did in '89, that player would be in contention to be a lottery pick.

Vart, Aaron Bruce averaged 18 ppg in his freshman year, 5 years younger than Gaze for his first year of NCAA, now he's been cut from the NBL! Just sayin

Melbourne Boy, thanks for backing up my point, even though I'm not sure you meant to. Going back to Bruce's freshman season, everyone was calling him the next Steve Nash. If he had of declared for the NBA draft after his freshman season, he would have definitely been selected, most likely in the first round, and possibly even in the lottery. That was how impressive his freshman season was. Unfortunately for his basketball career, he decided to stay in school, and for many reasons was never able to recapture his freshman form, or live up to the lofty expectations placed on him following that remarkable year.

Is this the same Jason Kapono that got cut by his Greek League team? Or some other Jason Kapono I don't know about?

If Lindsay was coaching then Andrew would be scoring champ... And an NBA all-star!

Basically saying that when Andrew Gaze felt confident and self assured about his place on the team, he got it done like champions tend to do.

Defence and lack of athleticism or not, Gaze is a star and he would surprise a lot of people
