Andy Stewart Wildcats' senior Assistant Coach

From my inbox to your eyes:

Perth Wildcats name Andy Stewart assistant coach

The Perth Wildcats have signed Andy Stewart as their head assistant coach for the next three seasons.

Stewart has had a heavy involvement with the club since 2009, including the 2010 championship, as part-time assistant coach and head coach of the Wildcats Academy, but this new position will see him become full-time assistant coach.

Stewart said he's looking forward to beginning in his new role.

"It’s a very exciting time for the club, it’s an opportunity to build on the solid foundations of the last few years and a great new challenge for me," he said.

“I have a chance to further develop under a new head coach and to work on individual player development with both new and old members of the team. That’s where my strengths are, and I can’t wait for the pre-season.”

The position means Stewart will end his time as head coach of the Lakeside Lightning whom he has coached for 14 seasons and currently has sitting three games clear on top of the SBL ladder.

Stewart is a product of West Australian basketball and in his time at Lakeside has won three championships, four coach of the year awards and has made the league’s grand final an impressive six times. He has also been Lakeside Lightning’s Director of Coaching WABL since 1995 where he won two coach of the year awards and an amazing 20 junior WABL championships.

Stewart was also the head coach of the Athletes in Action Australia team from 1996 - 2005, the assistant coach of the WA men’s under 20s state team, the head coach of the women’s under 20s state team and the head coach of the Men’s SBL tour of Indonesia in 2011.

He was named the Department of Sport and Recreation’s High Performance Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2012, as well as Community Coach of the Year in 2010.

Andy Stewart will remain head coach of Lakeside Lightning until the end of the current SBL season.

Strange that they'd make an announcement like this without a head coach in place. Isn't it the head coach's prerogative to pick his assistants, especially "senior" ones?

Its possible they already have their head coach signed up, but could be holding out for the right time to announce it maybe? Otherwise yes it does seem odd they're signing players and assistants in the meantime without a HC in place.

Yeah, a lot of the Wildcats off-season activity has been damned peculiar to say the least.

Still, seems like a good replacement for Shawn Dennis. Wonder if he'll be up to sledging on SportFM like his predecessor =D

Players is one thing but a lead assistant is another thing entirely...

They must already have head coach sorted they are most likely picking their moment to announce it.

Definitely odd to announce before a head coach, certainly not unexpected though.

In fact anyone within an earshot of the SBL already knew this (and Shawn Dennis getting the Townsville gig) a long time before it was actually announced.

ha ha 28 straight playoffs for 4 titles.

pretty poor really. i think id rather bomb out every 5 years than choke 24 out of 28 years.

5 titles...

From 28 years that isn't bad actually. The whole consecutive playoff record thing can be a bit overdone sometimes. There were some lean years in there as well where the Cats just scraped in the playoffs, and could easily have missed out.

Of course Robert Pack your argument would hold more weight if there was a club in the NBL with more titles than the Wildcats.

@Robert Pack, Your old basketball mate Karl Malone would have to disagree with you. Played 18 years for the jazz and made the playoffs 18 years without winning.

Andy Stewart is quality.

What he has done with some of those Lakeside teams has been remarkable.
