Pledger heading to Melbourne to learn off Bogut

Pledger leaves for Melbourne on July 9 and will spend four days and four sessions learning off Andrew Bogut in his facility. He was unsure of the exact nature of the workouts, given Bogut has recently concluded a gruelling season but given Bogut is a Starting NBA Centre I'm sure Pledger will learn plenty.

"He's definitely a player in the NBA that I follow,'' Pledger said. "There's not many players in the NBA from this part of the world, so he's definitely someone that I think a lot of us down in Australia and New Zealand keep an eye on to see how his team's going.

"I've played against NBA players before but he's a former No 1 pick and a starter. He's had his injury problems the last year or two but before that he was on the verge of being an All-Star. So that's how you truly compare yourself and find out your true strengths and weaknesses and what you need to work on.''

Having clinched their third title, the Breakers sat down with all contracted players to discuss avenues for advancing their individual games. For Pledger, who had just signed for Bogut's management company, that avenue was obvious.

It will be good for Pledger to improve for the NBL's sake. However, bit worried if he gets too good and NZ beat us or something.

He also spent a couple of weeks last year at Luc Longleys training 1 on 1 organized by Andrej Lemmanis.

Some help with his footwork could go a long way. Seemed to travel a lot when on the block last season

He struggled on the boards last year... When breakers lost he would have 2 or 3 for the game, which isn't good enough.

I hope for his sake they keep the all-star game and it inspires him into showing us his best, with Trueman his back up we all know Chief Pledgehammer will get his minutes!

Yet the Breakers didn't struggle to rebound the ball over the course of the season.
He had to share the boards with Vukona, Abercrombie and Jackson also.

There were def a couple of games early on in the season where he was a ghost on the boards and the Breakers paid but they were the exception rather than the rule.

He had the odd game where he wasnt a big factor on the boards. Yet finished third in the league in rebounding average and 1st in total rebounds collected in 22 mins a game...

...and led the league in offensive rebounding by a MILE!! 11 and 7 in 22 mins (plus league leader is blocks) is pretty impressive! Check out his stats last year for the two months last season when Hudson was injured and he was playing legit starters minutes! Was probably the best center in the league during that stretch, he did win back to back POW, and in the finals outplayed Knight IMO..especially in game 2. Think hes gonna have a big year next year

(Sorry not sure why that ended up being two posts)

Us people from Aust and NZ really should try and help each other out more often (ANZAC's against the world).

Anzac's making an impact on the world (given our size) is a fantastic effort.

Its just that NZ'ers seem obsessed with what they think we are thinking about them.

Yeah, apart from a couple of games Pledger was pretty damn good on the boards.

Wouldn't mind seeing a combined aust/kiwi team would be more Aussies and strictly hypothetical but fun to speculate anyway

Apparently Oceania is soon being merged with Asia for FIBA qualifications, so perhaps we have more of an incentive to cooperate in the future.
