World University Games 2013

The Aussies opened up with an 85-57 thrashing of the Czech Republic.

Blanchfield and Steindl led the way with 15 points and shot the eyes out of it from outside, Ellis, Bairstow and Young were also in double figures.

They play Sweden tonight in their second game.

Steindl has been very impressive over the last month of Tournament play with Boomers, Stankovic Cup and now WUG team. Hopefully this gives him a solid foundation into the coming NBL season. His workload may need to be monitored over the first few weeks of pre season though or he will burn out.

I'm guessing this is why we didn't see Gliddon in this WUG team? Managing workload?

I was blown away by the size of this event. Looked on website there are 13000 competitors from 170 countries and the opening ceremony was attended by 80000 people. Yet you hardly read or hear anything about it.

Eurosport are televising the WUG, I imagine they will show basketball as it gets to the pointy end of the tournament ala the Olympics.

Good stuff. Steindl has IMO always been suited to International competition - whether that translates to the Boomers team down the track is yet to be seen.

Boomers need some very good shooters and Steindl does at least tick that box.

So we are playing this games seriously where other countries treat it like it is the Uni games.

Piss drinking trip for uni students, nothing more than that. If the team is playing without a hangover, they should forfeit.

Pretty good team with quite a few NCAA players.. names that sticks out the most to me are Kevin Pangos from Gonzaga, Kyle Wiltjer from Kentucky and Brady Heslip from Baylor.

Aussies take on the US today I think
