Just saw this on Twitter:

U got it RT @deangm36ers: @G_erv3 @adamgibson_1 you need number 9 and I need a signature

So it looks as though the Sixers have secured the signature of Gary Ervin...

Nervously optimistic.

Not a huge Ervin fan, and I like Gibbo at PG as much as possible, but as long as we can still find a decent SF import with the cash left, we will have a pretty potent lineup.

What cash left! Ervin charges a fortune. And Joey Wright always gets his man, no matter the cost and the long term existence of the club. Im cautious about this one in a lot of ways. Hoping for the best and lots of winning, but concerned at what cost.

Good Signing! Like last year, a little concerned about the lack of outside shooting but oh well.
Kobe24, I hear your concern, but do you actually know this, or just assuming?

The way the 36ers have chopped and changed imports, lost game after game, lost sponsorship dollars, lost revenues in people not coming to games - I don't think whatever Ervin is being paid is going to do the damage that Ninnis/Clarke did (not saying it's Ninnis' fault - he wasn't given fair time IMO). If the expense happens to send the 36ers over the edge into oblivion, he certainly wouldn't be the main cause.

We need Ervin, his talents, his charisma to get the 36ers A) winning, B) getting more sponsorship dollars and C) getting more bums in seats. The extra expense may be what revives Adelaide, and chances of future solvency.

Anyway, i'm ecstatic, it's looking like a championship contender.

C Schenscher/Petrie
F Johnson/Anthony
F Creek/Import
G Gibson/Teys
G Ervin/Cadee

Agree about the lack of shooting, but for the first time in years the Sixers are going into the season with a proven, grade A import! Well done SOS, another quality chip locked in. Now lets find a SF who can shoot the three!

Welcome Gary Ervin!!!

Very Excited, best player we have signed in a long time, not many league MVP's have played for the 36ers, short of landing Cedric Jackson (which was likely impossible) this is the next best thing, so get excited 36ers fans!

I remember in the game when Creek went down watching him torch us and similar when he was with the Hawks atleast he is on our side now.

I do agree with prefering Gibbo as a Pg, but no reason Gary cant play sg and take on the scoring load which is what we needed next to Gibbo ad the Gibbo/Cadee backcourt just doesnt cut it, neither score well enough.

Looking forward to next season and also seeing who they can get in the 2nd import spot, if Joey can unearth a gem on the cheap we should be back in playoffs!!!!!

People talking about his price, like I've said and will keep saying Gary wanted to come here, price is between 100-150k which for a Proven player a MVP of the league is fair. People saying gibbo at pg did you watch last year?? We needed a guy that can control things down the stretch and now we get that guy and people are complaining. Ervin pg and gibbo at sg is perfect, just think how good gibbo played with deleeon

Totally agree anon #427048....last season Gibbo panicked with the ball when he came up against the likes of Cedric Jackson. Now Gibbo can focus on D and stretching the defense at the other end whilst not having to worry about ball handling duties or shouldering a lot of the scoring.

Gary and DJ were both in the top 5 scoring last season so we should have no trouble putting the ball in the hoop!

Wow, I was hoping to get Ervin in Perth whilst Martin recovers from his archilles injury, but for Adelaide this is the best reason to attend a basketball game since that sexy blonde cheerleader you have there.

As for needing more scoring from Gibson/Caddee, I totally disagree, if they were the playmakers they were contracted to be and dished out more assists then their shooting/scoring woes would be much lessened... I still think in a 40 minute game that your PG's should dish out atleast 2 assists a quarter, why settle for less?

Finally signed someone willing to take the last shot and wanting the ball for the final play. How many times did we not even get a shot away in the dying seconds last season.
Exciting player to watch so hopefully the arena can get loud again as under Clarke we were fundamental but boring.

A good import, couple of Boomers squad guys, and a coach smart enough not to play Schenscher and Johnson together, things are starting to come together.

I don't understand why anyone would want Gibbo at point guard. He has been there and played that role due to lack of options and nothing else. He is a shooting guard that has been forced into that role and watch him play better when hes given the freedom to take shots.

Gibson's best basketball has been at PG. Alongside Deleon he was average. Hopefully Wright has learned from that and both Gibson and Ervin will have plenty of the ball in their hands.

Defense and chemistry are going to be the big question marks for these Sixers. Both were woeful last year and it remains to be seen whether it was a coaching thing or something inherent with the roster.

Gary Ervin is a great NBL player, that's all there is to it. He puts in a massive effort every game day, and is unstoppable in the open court. He isn't as bad on defense or from the outside as people make him out to be, and he is one of the best free throw shooters in a league where no one can shoot free throws. You won't be disappointed.

Happy to have Gary here. To those wondering about the price, remember that the signings to date have been budget options in Anthony and Teys. Outgoing from last season would've been Weigh (on reasonable money, I would've guessed) and Crosswell (vet salary, I suppose). There'd be something to work with at least.

Hopefully the second import can hit the three though.

The Sixers still need three point shooting and defense, along with the intangible element of "toughness" that you really only have with Ervin, Gibbo and Peach.

The only problem with getting an import wing that can hit the three is that you will in all liklihood be giving up defense. Imports who can hit the long ball and play D with wing size are generally NBA calibre, even if they can do little else, unless of course you take a gamble on an unheralded, undrafted college graduate.

The biggest question mark for my money though is whether they are going to continue to have such a high useage rate flowing through DJ because his stats look pretty, or whether they want to win ball games.

Was DJ the golden boy of the ownership and management or just Marty? Ie. would benching him ruffle any feathers up the tree? Peach is just better in every way; one of the best bigs in the league and he's playing behind a muppet.

Mick, from observations I've found that defensive specialists at the 2 to 3 position are usually great spot-up shooters. It's quite weird, but something I picked up a while ago.

Was obvious last year Gibbo, Weigh and Cadee were the favs...

every play was gibbo to weigh or cadee to weigh to gibbo or vice versa...

unfortuantely moet of the time weigh or gibbo would miss the open look or panick and cause a turnover...

DJ matured under Clarke but still has a long way to go... last season was a backward step for him and the franchise...

Only way is up... any further south and the club will struggle for a very long time!

Im still concerned for the club as all they have changed is the coach and bought in Ervin and Anthony and Teys... lost pero, weigh, crosswell, Daly and someone named Christopherson (?)...

Will be waiting till game one against Perth over there to see what they can do..

as we all know preseason form dont mean shit!

@Mick agree but its interesting that it took so long for them to admit there mistake... MArty would have been a great assistant coach imo... working on the development side of the players and improving technique...

one thing that frustrates me to no end is why dont tall players 'fake' anymore when close to the rim?

90% of the time get an easy foul and possibly even get a bonus?

hmmm...

Cant wait to see them in Oct!

He definitely got better as he grew more comfortable with the officiating. I would happily have him at my club. He would be a good fit in Adelaide as a long versatile 'tweener forward who can defend, but wouldn't address their three point shooting dearth. Guys like that fit in anywhere.

He has a face-up game no one knows about, he showed it in the preseason. Then again, his inability to knock down the jumper was probably scouted as the season went on so he was ineffective on the drive. In general though, he needs to play harder. His balls grew larger through the course of the season, but still. An undersized but athletic guy like that needs to get mean. "YA GOTTA GET MEEEEAN" -Patches O'Hoolihan.

the 2nd import we need is someone exactly like Dave Thomas was, the problem is its hard to find that for min salary,

For those with knowledge of NZ, SEABL, state leagues, any imports of that mould playing in them? Are Akeem Wright or Brian Greene worth considering?

Joey is heading off to the US this Saturday, was a planned holiday before signing up as head coach of the Sixers. Joey will also use this trip to scout a few players.

So, I wouldnt say they are looking only at SEABL, NZNBL etc...

Allan Sheppard has been bandied about a bit, I think he would be a good fit and would more than likely come cheapish?

ok cool, hope Joey finds someone good, he has in the past so i back him in.

Sheppard could be a good fit, looking at his college stats he doesnt seem much of a 3pt shooter, which could be a concern, but could be ok, anyone seen him play? is he a bit of a Tucker type 3 man who can handle the ball and do most things fairly well but not a great shooter? I think we need someone who can shoot more than his stats suggest, but wouldnt be too upset if they went with him, with min salary you are not going to get the perfect player.

I dont think our 3 point shooting is all that bad....Ervin isnt that bad, I know he went 3/4 from deep in one game against us last season. Gibbo is more than capable as are Cadee, Petrie and Johnson.

I think our offensive structure was very lacking last season (and alot of those before it) so a good structure should help get some open looks.

Tornado, I agree, but it's still mediocre at best. Plus we don't really want Johnson (especially), Petrie and Ervin on the perimeter shooting 3's. Funnily enough, I think Weigh would have been a great fit haha.

Having watched Greene and Wright in the NZNBL this year Wright would suit better as Greene is more ball dominant and Wright is a better shooter. Would go Andrew Warren before both though if possible

Kevin Brooks would be an asset for the swingman... his knowledge of the league and what it takes would be a great asset to the club!

Yea Weigh would have suited this role, but if we had kept him we would have gone for 2 cheaper imports and not be able to afford Ervin, so unfortunatly to get the star import Weigh had to move on, he possibly wanted to anyway, so could be a win/win for both parties.

Well done SOS as great signing ,2nd only to the change in coach .
Not only will he keep the scoreboard moving but create some excitement for the crowd and that will get the numbers back after watching Clarke crap for so--ooo long.
After giving up our 6 season tickets last year for 1 st time since left Apollo as could not handle the Dynamic Duo led crap any longer .
After Wrights signing we are all back on board again and looking forward to getting into it again, and this signing further sign we will have club moving forward to finals again.

I agree anon #427129. My point though is, those players are all capable and have to be respected from the perimter. Whilst none of them are really Dead Eye's they are all streaky so opposition teams wont really want to give them any open looks from beyond the arc to get them going.

Bryant Markson was suggested on ozhoops as a 2nd import, a 7'7 sf playing for the Wellington Saints,

quick look at the stats he seems to be the right type of player, decent numbers for 3pt shooting,

rebounding, scoring and steals so indicates he is a versatile sf who plays defense and can shoot which is what we want.

Someone said earlier about Petrie being a far better player then Johnson, I totally agree. Johnson to me is like a cancer to the team. Has 'some' skills but defensively is a liability, shows little effort, and if his shot isnt falling he provides next to nothing. The team would do far better with him being Schenshers back up. I don't think Shensh is all that either but he is good at being 7 foot and being 'in the way'. I actually think BJ Anthony will be a very good back up.

Wow would be interesting to see Ewing Jnr get the gig, seems to be the right style of player.

An interesting thing is it could be a huge marketing opportunity for the club/league too with the famous Ewing name, especially if you can get his dad to come and watch his son play at some point even do a few clinics like the Irvings have recently done.

Obviously he has to be the right style of player or its not worth it, but if he is it could potentially have some off court/marketing benefits too.

I trust Joey will find someone good, whether its Ewing or not, will be very interested to see who we get and cant wait to see Ervin and the 36ers in action!!
