Big V State Champ Men GF

Corio Bay Stingrays vs Ringwood Hawks Grand final series and what a cracker it will be.

In what comes as a surprise to some, Ringwood defeated Bulleen in 3 games. Bulleen's depth got tested and it failed the test and worst penalty possible and that is being eliminated. Mind you no Sturt through injury and Simmons had Australian duties (not sure 100% but that is what I heard).

Stingrays defeated Waverley in a cracking 3 game series. After a shoot out in game 1, it was a defensive battle in 2 & 3 with the Rays coming up with the goods.

What is everyone's thoughts about this series?
Should be an absolute cracker. Both teams with loaded with shooters and great inside presence.

I "Witnessed" for want of a better word last night and today's game.

Pretty scrappy affair with not much defense or structure, just lots of broken plays and perimeter, typical of BigV Champ Men.
Both teams foul a lot and keep on just keep on fouling, neither greatly disciplined in that area nor able to adjust.

The team that demonstrated the better composure won both games this weekend, who ever can keep their cool and execute has the best chance.

Corio are the most talented team in the top 4 with least talented coach.

If Corio can coach themselves on the court they will win it all.

I don't think in any finals series you see too many free flowing games due to coaching staff scouting opposition teams and players. Ringwood spanked Stingrays at Ringwood during the season. Interesting that both the top two teams have been eliminated. Both teams with veteran players but the title will come down to who turns up and plays the D. Both teams very tough on there own home courts.

I watched game 2 and there was a major reason why there was no flow in the game and that was because the game was over reffed. 50 fouls in a game prevents a good spectacle. It was a stop start game and very frustrating to watch and would be to play with a lot of calls being made that were very questionable. In game 1, the refs put the whistle away and it allowed for a good free flowing game and therefore a high scoring game with plenty of entertainment.

Ringwood did give Stingrays a good spanking mid season. A good wake up call for the Rays. Both teams are extremely tough at home and Stingrays having home court advantage for the series could make it the difference.

Eric Williams is on fire of late, will be interesting to see how Ringwood try and stop him.

Sorry sting but the way the game was called in game 2 and 3 was no different to how most SEABL games are called, the difference between 50 fouls in that game and 30 fouls in a SEABL game is the way teams adjust to the officiating and the skill level of the players.
Dumb players and teams keep fouling without adjusting.
Id expect the GF series to be called just as tightly too so the team that plays the cleanest and adjusts to how they officiate will have a big advantage.

It shouldn't be about the refs. No one wants to rock up to a grand final and watch a free throw contest. It should be about the players playing the game and putting on a show and allowing the best team on the night win the game. Let the boys play!

Exactly right Sting, people want to come and see a high quality, high standard game with top level skills and play, nobody wants to turn up and watch a virtual football match with off ball holding, hacking, blocking, no protection of shooters, manhandling the ball handler, poor behavior and sniping.

Luckily that's completely in the players hands and comes down to how the players play. Simple.

Finally someone agrees that Dan Riches is a spud of a coach! Still lives off the coat tails of his old man! Get a life of your own Dan!

Reardon coaches that team, Riches just sits and subs, he's not a technical coach by any stretch.

They don't appear to have much in the way of systems just drive and dish or score off breakdown.

They win on talent not process.

Plenty of haters for the Rays, not too much discussion about the upcoming grand final.

All these games will have huge crowds, both clubs have a fantastic following. Going to a wild 3 game series. Home court advantage the key.

What a fantastic game 1. Stingrays got up by 2 thanks to a Jason Reardon 3 pointer runner to beat the buzzer. In the lead up to that Ringwood missed 4 free throws in the dying seconds, which probably cost them the game. In saying that Stingrays didn't shoot well from the charity stripe all game and thought that could have bit us on the butt. The game was basket for basket and a real arm wrestle but in the end the Stingrays got the crucial first win.

Ma'alo Hicks was the star with 31 points and 11 rebounds.

Was a massive crowd and a very loud one and after the exciting game 1, game 2's crowd will be MASSIVE especially down at Stingray Stadium where they already average 400 to regular season games.

Bring it on!

Big effort to win the first one, let's hope the local media in Geelong get on board and really pump it up!!

Should be a massive basketball weekend in Geelong next week, but will probably be overshadowed by footy again...

I agree - what a fantastic game - free flowing for most part great shooting inside & outside - both teams stepped for the occasion. Definitely a high standard of basketball from both teams as you would expect.

Watched the replay on mindittv and while the video & sound quality could have been better it was a great initiative.

Commentary was ok and apart from missing the last shot of the game on the main camera it was really well done.

When teams are 55-55 at half time you know its a good game.

Compare that to the rubbish played at Keilor against Melton 46-54 FULL TIME score - with both teams unable to score shooting at only 10% & 13% from 3-point range 27% & 24% from 2 point range and only 30% & 57% from foul line - you would hardly believe people paid money to watch that game.

But then the Mens game was the curtin raiser for the Div 2 Womens game??

Think I'll drive down to Corio Bay to watch the SCM GF Game 2 between the Stingrays & Hawks - should be sensational.

Those who said it would be a one sided affair were completely wrong. Never underestimate Ringwood, they are one tough unit.

Game 2 is going to be an absolute beauty especially after the game 1 finish. The video has gone viral and so it should with a great finish to end game 1 of a grand final.

Stingray Stadium is going to be open for all, no limit for attendance.

VP, best to get there quite early if you are after a seat or you can hit up the bar and stand at court 2.

Very nice moment, great composure by Jason Reardon to nail that last floater from the 3, not travelling in the process; and not to forget the awesome rebounding effort with a heads up delivery down the court from import Eric Williams under the pressure of a double team...

The youtube highlight video has topped over 2,200 views, nice!

Good work FalconsTV, should be another cracker this weekend down at South Geelong...

Stingrays win the championship 91 to 86 in front of a big and vocal home crowd. Was another fantastic game and went down to the wire again. Even though it didn't go to 3 games, the league couldn't have asked for a better finals series

Eric Williams named finals MVP
