WNBL Media Awards announced

The 2013/14 WNBL Media Award Winners are:

Best Newspaper Coverage: Bendigo Advertiser

The Bendigo Advertiser has taken their coverage of the Bendigo Spirit to the next level, providing in-depth analysis, extensive photo galleries, feature columns and an unrivalled online home for news and results.

Best Radio Coverage: ABC North Queensland

Through ABC Grandstand online and 630 ABC North Queensland all Townsville Fire home games have been broadcast in the 2013/14 WNBL season. The broadcast features interviews with key players and coaches as well as guests and analysis.

Best Television Coverage: ABC Inside Edge

This piece provided a fantastic insight into one of the great coaches of the WNBL and Australian sport, Carrie Graf. This raw and compelling interview took viewers through Graf's broad basketball journey, including her formative years, her long-time on-court partnership with Capitals guard Natalie Hurst, and her personal story leading into and following the 2012 London Olympics and 2012/13 WNBL season. It typified the work done by the ABC across its numerous TV outlets in telling great stories in women’s sport.

Best Feature: Graf doubles with joy - Chris Wilson, Canberra Times

A ground-breaking piece in Australian basketball – the first time Canberra Capitals Head Coach Carrie Graf has opened up so candidly about her personal story – this feature provided a rare look behind the scenes at Graf’s life both on and off the court, including her father’s battle with non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and her own journey through motherhood following the arrival of twins Charli and Bentley. A brilliantly told story which speaks volumes of the strong relationship between the Canberra Times and the Capitals.

Best Photograph: Michelle Couling, Michelle Couling Photography

A photographer of the highest quality, Couling regularly captures the very essence of the WNBL in all games she shoots. Her best photograph award winner shows the commitment and determination of the WNBL players.

WNBL Basketball Writer of the Year: Roy Ward, The Age

In a high quality field, Ward was a standout, with his consistent coverage of the Victorian-based WNBL clubs in one of Australia’s highest selling newspapers. His unique features and detailed analysis have provided great reading throughout the season – tracking the progress of teams and players in 2013/14 and capturing stories around the league fans want to see.

The Wattle Valley WNBL would like to congratulate the winners of the 2013/14 WNBL Media Awards and also thank the high-quality nominees for their outstanding coverage of the competition around Australia.
