Ogilvy to leave Kings for Europe

Spotted this in an SBS article about the Kings searching for a new coach:

Towering centre AJ Ogilvy only signed a one-year deal and has told the club he plans to play in Europe.

I guess he has an Irish passport so wont be an import.

Stats compared to Johnson

Johnson
Season Statistics
19.8 PPG
6.8 RPG
1.1 APG
54.6 FG%

Ogilvy
Season Statistics
13.1 PPG
8.7 RPG
1.9 APG
57.1 FG%

The biggest difference is not shown here though where Ogilvy's defensive efforts are highlighted with 65 blocks compared to Johnson's 20 (Schenscher has 18 with a lot less minutes and Petrie has 26) over the entire season. Pledger has more with only 13 games compared to 28!!!

Bit hard to imagine that a team would take Johnson on as an import when his numbers aren't that much bigger

European basketball is a wide wide world, it all just depends how high or low you want to go. Rhys Carter was an import in Europe, so is Ater Majok.

Europe is great as long as your getting paid.Spoke to an agent who said the bigger leagues are still strong with good money but the smaller leagues and countries are struggling financially making Australia an attractive option for less money. At least here you know your going to get paid.

Not surprised by this.

Slightly unrelated, but SBS covered NBL basketball!? I didn't even know they knew it existed!

Looks like a lot of cutting and pasting from the ATF article.

AJ will land in a solid league as he is a big with good pedigree and solid post skills.

No dobut the smaller leagues often don't pay imports after a loss or if finals are out of the questions they don't pay them then sack them and won't offer them a clearence if they try and take the matter to FIBA.

SBS doesn't know the NBL exists .... they just know Europe when they sign Australian's that are good at anything.

"AJ will land in a solid league as he is a big with good pedigree and solid post skills."

Not so sure about that he had a decent year in Turkey in 10/11 but really struggled in Spain and then Germany after that which is a lower standard league before he came back home.

Has he increased his stock? Arguably but more than a few games where he was a complete non-factor like Friday night against the Hawks playoff spot on the line 6pts, 3ast, 1reb, 4to.

He didn't really play in the German league, he was mostly used in Bamberg's Euroleague games.

AJ played for one of the biggest clubs in Turkey, Spain and Germany, there would plenty of other clubs keen to have his services.

Especially if he has a passport and doesn't have to play as an import.
His numbers don't reflect how good he is just how flawed the Kings system was. Every possession the ball should have gone through his hands but instead Sam Young went 1 on 4.

The article on SBS was a syndicated story from AAP. No way they would cover it themselves.

SBS are the worst in fact when covering NBL. They always go on about the plight of the world game and its domestic league and are a champion of its cause. Yet they are two faced as they've completely ignored basketball even more so than the main free to air networks ABC, 7, 9, 10 whether presently or historically. Hypocrisy at its highest.

Yeah but the fact that an article (despite syndicated) even made it to the SBS website is bizarre to say the least and about as random as it gets!

Im not worried about their coverage of basketball to be honest. They have always had a different agenda to the rest of the media when covering sport. Soccer of any league is a higher priority than even the AFL and NRL. Cycling also gets an unusually good run as well due to them showing the Tour de France.

They have a bit of a pretentious quality about them and they probably think they're too good to give basketball a mention.

Ogilvy's numbers with Sanders:
16p at 63% (first stint 18p at 58%, second stint 15p at 67%)

Ogilvy's numbers without Sanders:
10p at 51%

For a big guy like AJ - who isnt a super low post player and doesnt have Knight-like grunt but relies on getting the ball in good spots - a good PG is crucial.

Don't know about SBS being "up themselves" is behind their European focus. Their charter (http://www.sbs.com.au/aboutus/corporate/index/id/25/h/SBS-Charter) requires them to fill the gap left by ABC and other broadcasters for that part of the Australian population born overseas. That's more than 25% of Australia's population and about 11% alone were born in Europe (ABS, 3412.0 - Migration, Australia, 2011-12 and 2012-13).

Paul you seem sold that Sanders is a good pg.

It seemed to me once he returned that teams sagged off him like he was a domestic player and it made everyones job a offense a little more difficult.

I loved everything else he brought to the table although his lack of ability to shoot seemed to offset a lot of the other things he brought to the table.

The strange thing was that when he stepped into his shot with a nice one two hop his shot looked ok.

The numbers suggest he was a good PG for Ogilvy.

When Sanders moved inside instead of taking the outside shot when opposition sagged off him, he was much more effective.

The loss of AJ is pretty disappointing, not surprising, but still disappointing all the same, as while his season started off well, it sort of ended with a fizzle... He's not really leaving on a high after leading his team to a Grand Final, or even the playoffs, he started off dominating but now it's sort of like he's running off, job incomplete...

European teams are banned from competing in any European league and also banned from signing any foreign players, as well as even banned from signing any domestic players that did not sign play for their own team the previous season if they fail to pay any players.

So all this nonsense that they don't pay players is just completely made up by American agents. They are sometimes late on payments. That's it. When they are late on payments they get a judgement against them from FIBA and have to end up paying even more.

This whole "they don't pay players in Europe" is the biggest con job going today from US sports agencies.

You obviously haven't spoken to many players who've played in Europe. Chat to Worthington and Markovic about their team from last year, which played in the Eurocup this year.

A number of teams will dare players to spend more in legal costs to recover their unpaid money, knowing more often than not they will choose to move on.

Your premise about "US agents" is also poorly thought out. Why would they spread false rumours that stop players they represent from signing contracts that deliver the agents their wage?

Rubbish
Many many Australians have had problems with payments. The FIBA courts are back logged and the players can't move on without a clearance, which takes almost a year to come through if you take action. Only way to get the clearance is to walk away or take a reduced payment.

Southern European leagues are notorious for late or no payment at all. No idea where Anon #357 got his notion from.
