New NBL operations manager Derek Mactavish??

Anyone know much about this guy?

What exactly are his credentials? (Apart from being involved in the NBA)

What does an "Operations Manager" do exactly?

Bret Mactavish?

He was the Director of International Basketball Operations at the NBA for 5 of 6 years. Before that he was the ops manager for the WNBA and ops manager for Basketball at the 1996 Olympics.

Thanks for that.

So what does he bring to the table for the NBL product?

with that resume hopefully he would help to continue to grow the NBL/NBA links.

Wouldnt it be awesome if each NBA club could have a 'sister club' set up with a NBL team, we could help develop some of their raw talent in a tough leauge, help them grow up a bit along the way, they could help us get some good players and even see if we could get some sort of financial support or something from the NBA clubs, lets face it $100k to a NBA club is basically nothing, but would be a massive bonus to a NBL club.

Will be interesting to see what he brings but he sounds like an exciting pick up for the NBL office, things sound like they are heading in the right direction, exciting times ahead i think!

Wouldn't it be cool if NBA owners bought NBL teams just like Man City bought Melbourne Heart

Most basketball leagues around the world dream of such a tie up why would Australia be #1 choice if NBA decided to do it.

What other league do you think is better positioned?

It's sort of likening it to a company being ripe for a takeover... One side much more in need of the other and (based on previous decision making) probably more than happy to bend over a little bit more for the more famous suitor...

Not saying that it would be a disaster, but having people or entities in charge of something on the other side of the world when they've got probably much different goals and no real reason to put themselves out for the sake of another country, is a bit scary...

Not quite sure about the Asian leagues, but surely there wouldn't be any other leagues in Europe that would be willing to give up so much control?

NBA would took note that AUS was it was its number one merchandise consumer outside the US iirc so franchisee options wouldn't be to far fetched.

I think that's actually international items sent by the NBA store. Australia's merch sales aren't a pebble in the Chinese ocean!
