WNBA Draft

Congrats to Steph Talbot and Carly Mijovic, who today got drafted into the WNBA.

How does this work? Did they need to nominate?

Bascially players born overseas in 92 were eligible.

Getting drafted is basically an invite to try out for the team.

Its tough to make wnba squads at 19 years old which is why players like Carly and Steph are debating whether to go, as you want to time it right so you don't go over for 3 weeks and get cut and end up out of the wnba system.

If a player doesn't show up to camp the team retains the rights to the player.

So does that mean they aren't in the team, just trying out?

Its unlikely either will go this year unless they get a strong indication from the club that there is a spot available for them.

How did their names get into the draft to start with

Both born in 92 which made them eligible.

Like Astou Ndour from Spain, having a good under 19 championships would have brought them to the attention of wnba teams.

Don't think they were born in 92, more like 94. My son was born 93 and older than both those two girls, Steph was always age below him during SA country

draftees had to have finished college or been 4 years out of high school, according to wiki, so 22 years of age or older

Above anon, that rule is for american based players. International players have the below rule;

D. She is an international player (meaning a
player who was born and resides outside of the United States) who has
had (or will have) her 20th birthday during the calendar year in which
the draft is held.

So 1994 for this years draft.

Full rules below.

A player is eligible to be selected in the Draft at the earliest
occurrence of the following: A. She had (or will have) her 22nd
birthday during the calendar year in which the draft is held, and she
either has no remaining intercollegiate eligibility or renounces her
remaining intercollegiate eligibility by written notice to the WNBA at
least ten days prior to such draft. B. She has graduated from a
four-year college or university, or "is to graduate" from such college
or university during the three-month period following such draft and
she either has no remaining intercollegiate eligibility or renounces
her remaining intercollegiate eligibility by written notice to the
WNBA at least ten days prior to such draft. For the purpose of this
subsection B, “is to graduate” means that such player would graduate
from the college or university she is currently enrolled in if she
were to successfully complete the coursework she is enrolled in at the
time of such draft and such course load is commensurate with previous
course loads she has successfully completed. C. She attended a
four-year college or university, her original class in such college or
university has already been graduated or “is to graduate” during the
three-month period following such draft, and she either has no
remaining intercollegiate eligibility or renounces her remaining
intercollegiate eligibility by written notice to the WNBA at least ten
days prior to such draft. For the purpose of this subsection C, “is
to graduate” means that the majority of the students in such class
would graduate from such college or university upon successful
completion of the coursework the members of such class are enrolled in
at the time of such draft. D. She is an international player (meaning a
player who was born and resides outside of the United States) who has
had (or will have) her 20th birthday during the calendar year in which
the draft is held. E. The league will circulate a list of any otherwise
eligible players who renounce their remaining intercollegiate
eligibility on April 4. Please note that a player who: (i) is
competing in the NCAA tournament during the period that begins ten
days prior to the draft; (ii) has remaining intercollegiate
eligibility beyond the 2010-11 season; and (iii) is otherwise eligible
for the draft, may make herself eligible for the draft by renouncing
her remaining intercollegiate eligibility within the period beginning
at the conclusion of her final NCAA game and ending twenty-four hours
thereafter. If any such players still playing on April 4 renounce
their remaining intercollegiate eligibility, we will circulate a
second eligibility e-mail as soon as we receive written confirmation
of the renouncement.

Renae was drafted by Houston but never went. Jess was drafted by Indiana and then traded to Connecticut and she went to a camp. Many colleges and wnba teams were interested in Gretel. Carly and Steph are investments in the future. America loves the new next best thing.

Are there any others that may have been considered, Bunton Blicavs for instance

Just the players born in 94, so mainly players from this team

Scherf perhaps...

players like Bunton, Blicavs, Bec Allen will need to play well at senior international level to get a camp invite as a free agent. Like Celine Dumerc getting signed to the Dream this year based on how she played at London 2012.

don't worry - their networks are out and about world wide - they would have known exactly who was around.

just a question of what sort of competition for a spot exists and what a team needs - a lot of factors come into play.

washington coach has enjoyed a strong relationship in recruiting and developing overseas players.

phoenix always has an aussie connection.

I wish everyone would stop using Bunton the WNBA and/or Opals in the same sentence, until she plays under a real coach she will not improve.

I think scherf is looking at colleges in the states.
I read something about her potentially going to louisiana state uni. I think wallace is off to college also and the froling sisters just signed with smu.

I would have thought Blicavs is the pick of that whole group!

I'm not sold on Blicavs, all her energy is at the offensive end. She needs to show some semblance of commitment at the defensive end. Still has that mentality of 'never seeing a shot she didn't like'!

What about Thompson, it was considered such a talented age group, has she/they lived up to expectations

Thompson is flat out trying to make a contribution in the WNBL. She would get eaten alive at the WNBA level for sure!

Having seen a couple of her games with Brisbane, they are allowing her to be the dominant player which is where she thrives. It's the star or it's nothing, and I believe that's why she's struggles in the wnbl. It's been allowed all through her junior career and now she's being pulled back into a team.

If she has the potential, can this not be trained into her? To be a team player? Somebody needs to work with her, get her to understand the concepts, and understand how to move etc. Or is this something that she will never be? Will she always be a superstar at ABL/SEABL level, but cannot make it at that next step?

This horse has already bolted here, these fundamentals of playing with the confines of team structure should have been instilled in her U/14 - U/16 playing days. FVille Eagles have dropped the ball in that regard & should have made her a more rounded team focussed player.

She has had so many opportunities with many great coaches over the years, she has had individual training with paid instructors, they all seem to work on her skills with the ball but has anybody tried to work on her mental abilities. This is where she lacks, great talent with the ball but no idea about team structure or plays, she has been poked with a stick and told to star, evident from early on. It's a shame really, could've been great, but I agree with above post, the horse has bolted.

Sherf is too young and is still very raw and under done physically, she would get eaten alive in the wnba, college would do her good. Biiclavs way to one dimensional,
