A lot of people (me included) get the names Bunton and Brunton confused.

Bunton is with Melbourne (confirmed)

Brunton playing seabl with Bendigo although currently on the opals tour (with Bunton)

I believe Dandenong were trying to get her (Brunton) if Liz fell through....

Veal potentially to Canberra was in the paper today. She is working for the COE team.

Dandy really should just sign Mitchell. Her and Kath can play together, and they'll need an extra playmaker/creator with O'Hea gone to get Kunek/Liz open.

" Bunton said - she was looking forward to new experiences in Adelaide after playing all five of her WNBL seasons in her home town.

"I've had a great time playing in the ACT but I felt it was time to try new things and the Adelaide program is going to be a great fit for me,"

“I know I've got a lot of work to do, but I want to make a big contribution to the Lightning and make sure I continue to improve so I can be a long-term member of the Opals squad.”

she is finally doing a Nat Hurst and going and playing outside the ACT - She will now get off the training meat roundabout of the Capitals "local development" program and after 5 years of riding the bench ( more in Hurst's case) finally get with a coach and program that will teach her how to play in the big leagues.

baring injuries - she will be a big cornerstone for the lightning for quite a few years if it goes well.

Very Old - she was a starter last season and she has developed into a member of the opals program.

Hurst hasn't for anyone else in the wnbl as far as I'm aware and she is also part of the opals program.

I would be surprised if Screen & Hodges returned to the Lightning as current ownership tried to get them to play for half their salary last year even though a contract was in place. Pretty shifty practice, that won't be forgotten by Screen & Hodges as they explore other options in the WNBL this year as Free Agents.

All these big signings at clubs is going to make for a strong competition. Waves to struggle again and have started to announce their signings.
Garbin good young talent and will be a good player, Amos back up point guard, Fielding bench/squad member.
Don't know if Doccy is going around again, but she couldn't be their marquee signing this time around.
Waves need to start signing some talent so their games aren't treated as a bye.

The reason things went south for Romeo in TVille was that Romeo thought she was a better player than Rachael Flanagan & would tell anyone who would listen that she was superior to Rachael (which is not true, no one would take Romeo over Flanagan?). Romeo also would tell anyone that would listen that Lucas was a crap coach & she should be a bigger focus on the team. Not very smart move to bag the Captain & Coach, probably the quickest way to get a one way ticket out of town...

Hopefully Sarah Graham is the first of a few good signings for the waves, need to chase a point guard and a quality big now. Screen harshly treated by Lightning given her years of valuable service to this club. Surely Screen would be more value to the Lightning than Marino? @477281 - maybe because the money they are spending on Marino could be better used if split between 2 players?

This is from the article by Boti on why Screen hasn't been re-signed as yet:

Screen said her agent had spoken with the Lightning and was informed the club did not wish to "insult her" with the paucity of the offer it could put to her.

“I would at least like to have had the opportunity to make that decision,” she said.

“If it was small, I could have viewed playing for Lightning as my second job and got on with it.

Do you actually think Marino gets paid by the lightning?

Not only is she a practicing Lawyer. Her dad owns the team.

She has never been paid by the lightning. And doesn't need to be cause her family is wealthy if you haven't guessed.

The budget has been cut, but it would be the likes of Hodges getting the bigger money, plus Langford and Bunton.

Foley wouldn't be getting much either as she has to be in Adelaide to study, and has no real other options and therefore no real leverage.

People that know basketball will have a big appreciation for what Screen brings to any basketball team that she plays for. She demonstrates outstanding leadership skills on & off the court & plays the game 'the right way'. Still easily one of the Top 3 defenders in the WNBL IMO.

If Screen was easily one of the top 3 defenders in the league, I would have thought that the Lightning would have been a better defensive team.

It's quite easy to claim a player you like plays good defense or a player you don't like plays bad defense. It would be better to see some sort of metric like defensive win shares.

This sort of thing happens. If you're a team leader and one of the better paid players on a team that doesn't achieve their goals (making finals) the next regime will look to change things.

It does sound like from Boti's article that she does consider herself a professional full time basketball player and I'm a little suprised by that.

To allow Bishop to increase her training, Graf worked tirelessly to help organise childcare for Zala as a clause in the WNBL contract.

Bishop will play the next two seasons with the Capitals after committing to the 2015-16 campaign.

She will team up with superstar Lauren Jackson and aim to resurrect the Capitals as a WNBL title contender.

The Capitals have also offered WNBL veteran Kristen Veal and rising star Carley Mijovic new contracts and hope the duo will commit this week.

Captain Jess Bibby and Carly Wilson are also expected to stay with the team as the Capitals chase an eighth WNBL title.

Sorry but why does bishop get special treatment or people expect her to get special treatment, regardless of how she became a parent, no other employer has to find child care for their workers, they find AND fund their own. This is after all a job bishop gets paid to do, her choice, no one is holding her arm behind her back to do either.

What are you talking about?

She is not expecting anything. Canberra wanted her on the roster and put together an offer that would attract her to the club.

If she didn't receive an offer that she was happy with she would have looked at her options elsewhere.

There are loads of expat Australian's working aboard that have nanny's or childcare or exclusive school's paid for as part of their contract.

Don't players when they turn professional way up financial offers? just like the Cambage transaction she went to the highest bidder?. It's well known both Lizzy, her mum and agent can't stand Dandenong. That's why she ended up at Bulleen a few years back. What's your point "the Flog"

Oh Wait sorry, everyone must be wrong, Cambage is signing at Rangers because Mark Wright has a fantastic track record of developing and managing players or the culture attracts players to want to be there?

Who cares what Mijovic does or where she ends up, the Caps have been good for her and Bunton. With Talbot at the Caps obviously the best young talent think Caps is a good option to develop.

Rangers have had Mijovic,Blicavs,Rebecca Allen,Rebecca Cole,Steph Cummings,Kate Ebzery,Nicole Hunt,Cambage and haven't been able to retain any of them. Seems as if the baggage maybe with the Rangers.

I also don't think Talbot's gone there to be a 'role player' as well, she'll want her shots too. Don't forget Bibby who has never ever met a shot she doesn't like! according to the article:

The Alcohol.Think Again West Coast Waves have secured one of the brightest young Point Guards in America for the 2014/15 WNBL season, Minnesota Lynx's Lindsey Moore.

Selected in the first round of the 2013 WNBA Draft, Moore secured a WNBA Championship Ring in her first year, playing 23 games in her Rookie season. A 2013 All-American for Nebraska, Moore has helped the Minnesota Lynx to an 8-1 start to the WNBA season to sit atop the Western Conference standings.

Great news for the Waves, biggest signing in years for them. Waves still desperately need a good big or two though to compete with every other wnbl team. I look forward to watching the Waves guards though.....Moore, D.Smith, Edmondson, Graham, Amos....pretty decent guard rotation.
Has Edmondson signed yet? Is she expected to?

Don't forget that Lindsey Moore is in only her 2nd year ans is behind Lindsay Whelan in the team - so its not exactly like she is the teams #1 PG playing 30+ minutes per night.
If we go by purely their WNBA averages, then Leilani Mitchell has a career average of 21.3 minutes per game for 2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 5.4 points. Those stats aren't too impressive either and would anyone have thought at the start of last summer that they would belong to the person who is potentially the new Opals starting PG?
I wouldn't read too much into their WNBA stats - O'Hea has a career average of 4ppg, Jarry averaged 1.7ppg last year, even Phillips has a career ave of 6.8ppg.

It would be very surprising if Moore's stats aren't more impressive over here during summer then what they are in the WNBA.

Waves have signed a power forward from the US. They just haven't announced it yet. She just finished college and was a WNBA draftee who got cut on the last day of camp.
Moore was a very good pg in college. She will be well liked by her teammates and the fans. So will the PF they signed.

The West Coast Waves have received a major boost in their bid to end a 14-year finals drought, securing the services of exciting American power forward Cassie Harberts for the 2014-15 season.

Harberts, 22, was a second-round WNBA draft selection this year after winning a gold medal with USA at the 2013 University Games.

She joins fellow American recruit Lindsey Moore at the Waves, who are rebuilding after finishing last with just one win.

Harberts said she was excited about heading to Australia.

"I have played against a few Australian teams in the last couple of years and from that I know that they play at the highest level of competition," Harberts said.

"To me Australian basketball is built around the concept of team unity, not individual play, which is what makes those teams so difficult to beat.

"I can't wait to play in a system surrounded by other fundamental players with a high IQ of the game."

Harberts averaged 15.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists a game in her senior season at the University of Southern California.

She finished her college career as USC's seventh all-time leading scorer and eighth- highest rebounder.

Waves coach Kennedy Kereama said Harberts would be a perfect fit.

"Cassie has international basketball experience playing for USA and is a winner at all levels of basketball," Kereama said.

"After listening to her it was easy to see her fitting into our team, the WNBL and way of life here in Australia."

Still more signings to come from the Waves as well. I would expect a decent interstate signing to come, hopefully a tall. Playoffs are a definite possibility for WA this year, Kereama has gotten some decent output from his youngsters, and Doccy will be fit to start the year as well. They stuck with a few quality teams last year before inexperience in closing out games cost them. I see them being big movers this year

As much as I want the Waves to do well I still think their roster is the weakest or second weakest to Sydney. In saying that if the team gels they do/should have the potential to be in most games and cause upsets along the way. I hope Tomlinson is a definite this season? but still they need one more capable tall, Burton was a big loss. Even someone like a Holly Smith would be value for the Waves in terms of being able to play defence on the other bigs around the league as there will be some really big girls and teams playing this season.

In last years World University Games in Russia, Harberts was guarding Marianna Tolo in the last minute of the game with the USA up by one point. Tolo had 2 chances to score and Harberts played solid defense on her, without fouling her, and forced her to take 2 harder shots than she probably wanted. Harberts had just finished her Junior year in college and Tolo already had 2 seasons of Professional ball under her belt.

Moore and Harberts are real good pick ups for the Waves.

American born guard Natalie Novosel re-considered her agreement with Italian club CUS Cagliari days after signing it at the end of the May and has now signed with Adelaide Lightning for the upcoming season.

The Italian team upon announcing that they have agreed to terminate agreement with Novosel also mentioned that she has accepted Australian passport.

Novosel played for Dandenong Rangers last season, averaging 9.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2 assists.

Forward Kathleen Scheer last season played for Sydney Uni Flames, averaging 8.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.

Novosel will be a big improver this season, moving away from the Wright/O'Hea show will only benefit her and provide opportunity to see if she can be a force in the league.

As an import in the WNBL you need an environment where you can get shots and have offences run to make things happen for you. Rangers offence was built around isolating O'Heas penetration and Kunek to spot up at the 3. Whatever else came was a bonus. Rangers played no Defence!

The WNBL this season should be wrap with Cambage and Wright at Rangers. Not often a WNBL team has two lottery picks on a roster at any one time.

The title beckons or........look out for tsunami.

Can't blame her, form has been great (shooting was a bit disappointing until the finals)

But when you're racking out that many assists and injury free, along with a chance of doing a 3PEAT!

I'd say Lavey is quite content with her role and being able to learn from the best PG will only help her development.

I had not heard that, terrific news for the Spirit if she does come up. Given she played no part in the finals that means it is the same team as last year but with her and Snell added plus Lavey getting the experience from Worlds and Blicavs working another year with Griffin. Starting five: Harrower, Snell, Blicavs, Griffin, Richards. Second unit: Lavey, Wilson, Garrick, Aubry, Penaluna and then Perera/Oliver/Chalmers figthing for scraps. Can't see any other team coming close to having a second unit as strong as that.
