Melbourne United release Adam Ballinger

Nat in another thread:

Adam Ballinger is a FA now after being released by the Tigers. I think he could be a solid pick up as a back up big man.
35 years old now. Got another contract left in him?

He's probably done best with defensive players around him, so could he be useful in Wollongong with Davidson and Gruber supporting? Good numbers from range last season so that would fit the Hawks?

Adelaide have their backups. Anywhere else?

The expansion teams might come a fraction late for someone in that age bracket (younger than me though!).

Wasn't helped by his injuries over the past few seasons. Sad to see him wasted really.

If Townsville aren't bringing back Vanderjagt, could be a handy 4/5 for them.

Ballinger is in as a 7. For a 35 year old with a history of injuries, that's a tad high IMO.

Other 7's are: Weigh, Walker, Tomlinson, Corletto, Garlepp, Hire, Jervis, Davidson, Blanchfield.

Hard to see him anything but a bench player, so he might see if he could make himself more attractive by trying for a re-rating (if that is still possible)

I think Stephen Dennis will sign with United. Not sure if this is old news but I saw this on Twitter today and it mentions Stephen Dennis being in Melbourne.

Here it is (Melbourne United Twiiter page);

"Who's coming down to the @NSMNews at the @MCG today? @Wortho33 and Stephen Dennis will be there between 12pm and 2pm. #schoolholidays"

If DJ goes overseas, could Ballinger be a cheap(ish) replacement and we can use the rest of the $$$ to get a stud import swingman, someone as good as James Ennis last season. Ballinger is a similar style of player to DJ, which is why they didnt go great together, and we wouldnt expect heaps out of him as the import would be taking DJs role as the star player albeit at a different position.

This would mean starting Schenscher at C and at times running a smaller line up with Petrie or Anthony at C, but i dont reckon it would be too bad, especially if it means we can grab a stud import sf which will be a massive gain.

Schenscher/Anthony
Petrie/Ballinger
Star import/Creek
Gibson/Teys/Crawford
Wilson/(Daly 11th man)

looks good to me, no real back up pg, but Gibbo can slide to Pg so aslong as one of Gibbo or Wilson is always on the court i have no worries there, if points permit give Daly the 11th spot to round out pg rotation.

Balls as backup to Schenscher if DJ leaves would be a good idea.

similar in as both like the mid range and perimiter shot and neither are great rebounders or defenders, both considered a bit soft inside.

They are miles apart these days in terms of offensive ability and aggression. DJ is at the height of his game.

We have had Ballinger before. He is like an old girlfriend that's come onto the market.

While the status is that of ex-girlfriend and you're available too, they are pretty attractive and you get thinking "they're not so bad", but anyone who has got back together with an ex, it's not too long before you understand why they're an ex.

If Balls comes back to the Sixers, don't expect the glory days.

Bringing back Ballinger and starting Schenscher... Not cool.
Didn't work 5 years ago when they were actually good.
If Schenscher is our starting centre, God help us.
That gun import had better be NBA quality...

He is most likely going to be another player forced out if the league due to the points system.

If you guys replace DJ with Ballinger you aren't making playoffs.

It doesnt seem that long ago that 6ers fans were up in arms because we didnt re-sign him.

people seem to be missing the point on the idea of Adam at Adelaide
He does not replace DJ

If DJ heads to Europe then Adelaide sign two imports & Ballinger off the bench if he comes cheap.

The imports could be a five man & point guard

It would be effecitively be Ballinger replacing Rhys Carter and a star import replacing DJ, (obviously playing different positions, etc, but minutes and $$ wise that would be the swap)

not a straight swap of DJ for Ballinger in terms of role/$$$$

We've already got Schenscher, Petrie & BJ Anthony under contract so we're hardly going to sign Balls AND an import centre.

Points will not push Ballinger out of the league. His body is failing him yet he still commands a big money deal to play back up minutes.
