Boomers vs Lithuania.. any more streams?

Just wondering if anyone knows of more streams for this game, as I doubt the Sportotv will be worth watching. Cheers

Hey GWB,

All I am saying is that I think it is pretty impressive that we get to see the game live at all. I didn't have much in the way of issues with the streams from the previous games but if it works better through the app then that may be the better option for you.

With a 2am game I will just have to hope that sportotv post it on their youtube channel afterwards so I can watch tomorrow.

Boomers D isn't at the level of past teams.

Apologies for misspelling names before. Names should end in "-as".

Brockas Motumas again with a scoring punch off the bench.

Lithuania having no problem getting to the foul line.

Itgoes without saying, but the Boomers would be radically different with a rim protector in Bogut and a scoring threat like Mills.

We are lucky to even be in the game at this point. Lithuania has got absolutely everything they wanted and we are only down by 11. IF we start getting our shots off we could end up making this a tight game, we should probably take heart in the fact that playing terribly, with home cooking referees and them hitting everything we are still well and truly in this. Changes will need to be made over the next 6 games.. we cant play like this and expect a medal..

In the end the scoreline was closer than the game, a 13 point loss for the Boomer's at the hands of Lithuania.

I am not going to sugar coat it. This was a pitiful game for Australia which exhibited all our teams weaknesses for us. The lack of rim protector and disorganised defence being the most notable deficits.

We can NOT play like this in the World Cup.

Lithuania got basically everything they wanted, when they wanted. It is a credit to us that we lost by a respectable margin, that really could have crept out past 30 points with the way the momentum was going.

I believe we are a better team than that display.

With 6 games left until the Worlds we have enough time to look at everything and patch the holes, I just ask whether we have the right personnel for the job. Overlook NBA experience.. Would Nevill be better suited than Jawai? Ogilvy better than Baynes?

Questions have to be asked after that game, not for the scoreline as much as the inside domination we were handed.

^ I don't know what you expect but facing Lithuania at home for arguably our most inexperienced Boomers side in a while is a pretty tough ask. To be able to compete for stretches while rotating the roster is a good sign. We do have these guys in our WC group and we play them a few more times prior so I'm sure Lemanis was/is trying to get a gauge on his team and the competition.

Broekhof DNP.

Should have taken Simmons. He would have been good for at least 10 mins here or there and his height and length, combined with his lateral speed would be a great defensive asset on this team.

Broekhof can't defend to save himself - he has poor lateral quickness.

If you can't find minutes for a (supposed) shooter like Broekhof in a pre-tournament warm up game, then I don't know how you can find minutes for him at all.

Regarding Goulding: yes deserves the green light. Anyone that can shoot it as well as he can deserves the right to shoot. He is the only pure scorer on this team IMO.

Delly is so solid. But this may sound weird, but he is almost too solid.

He plays such a level-headed game that he isn't going to lose you games.

The flipside of that is that he isn't really going to win you the big games. He doesn't have that same X-factor that I think this team requires.

He would be perfect alongside Mills - but without Mills, Boomers miss the Xfactor type and you can't rely on Dellys game to bring that xfactor.

Yep, anyone who doesn't play in a warm-up game, like Goulding and Broekhoff so far, should be immediately be sent home. I don't care if they're sick, injured, or rotated as part of the coach's plan, they should pack their bags. Another massive BA stuff up.

I assume the coach is just throwing out line-ups to see how players work together. ie using the warm up games the way he should.

Rotations won't be set until the last couple of warm up games. So it is a bit hard to make judgements at the moment.

Still doesn't mean the defence should be shocking.

I wrote this article last week on why I think the defence might not be great this tournament:

http://www.fiba.com/news/An-intriguing-drawing-board

I think they've picked young offensive-minded players over more experienced defensive-minded players to 1) replace Mills' scoring and 2) prepare for Rio with the aim of the team defence being a complete product by then.

It's a matter of trying to institute a more aggressive style while using similar principles in the halfcourt. It will take time, especially with few defensive specialists in the team.

At the 2010 WCs Slovenia and Serbia cut our defence apart but by 2012 we had improved, even if the style of defence made it hard for us to score until a change was made mid-tournament.

This was our first real test. Our first game against a team that is in the medal equation. I think we were completely and utterly outplayed.

Can our defensive lapses be fixed in time for the worlds? Was Lemanis just trying a few things that didn't work this time and we have nothing to worry about, or is this indicative of what we will see in Spain?

With 6 games left until the tournament surely there is time to fix these hiccups. We came good in the Olympics mid-tournament and went from a team who couldn't hit the side of a barn to one of the hottest teams in the comp and then gave the USA a bit of something to think about in our last game, can we do the same here but defensively?

I want to be optimistic but it did just look far too easy for Lithuania. It felt like more like a lack of defensive skill player for player than anything structural which is a worry.

We had one good game (in a dead rubber) against Russia whcich we had to win the Buzzer and lost to the the USA by 30+ the next game i can't see the link..

Our problems defensively seem to stem from the fact we can't defend the picknroll consistently, that's on the players and their decision making in my opinion whether to hedge or front the ball handler etc. there is no singular blueprint for defending the playmaker that can exploit the space. I do agree we have a problem in our half court defense in general though, there's just no one to protect the rim with any authority. Still, there have been some positive signs on both ends from these 3 games especially our press. I am opptimistic about our potential.

Reply #487667 | Report this post

Mick

I disagree anonymous: teams should have stout principles in place that govern whether to hedge, blitz, force them sideline, etc. There are about 5 or so different ways to defend the P&R. VERY FEW players should be making the decision in the instant (i'm talking all-world defenders)...for everyone else, the team should have a strict system in place, that may or may not change depending on which personnel are involved in the play.

If Lemanis has this blueprint in place and the players are mucking it up, that's a separate issue, but I really don't think he is a good enough coach at this level on either end of the floor (again...early days and would love to be proven wrong).

As for rim-protection: Bogut wasn't at the 2012 games and if I recall correctly we were in the top two or maybe even the best defensive squad at those games.

Nielsen helped at that end but even he was pretty slow by 2012,...but he knew what he was doing on that end.

We are missing a Nielsen type: which is an in-shape, motivated Mark Worthington (obviously a big if) or a Lucas Walker type who can play both forward positions and defend the pick and roll with footspeed (ie. guard the big if he dives or rolls AND get out to the three point line to contest shots). We are carrying way too many lumbering bigs. All of our bigs are 4/5s, 5/4s or straight 5s. We don't have any 4/3s, 3/4s or straight 4s IMO.

Bairstow and Motum are pretty much 5s in today's game, and then you have Jawai (i wanted him in this squad but boy was I wrong...looks at least 15 kg overweight), Baynes and Anderson. That's 5 different guys that can't guard quicker 4s. You don't need that many bigs on any team in 2014. Pick three of those guys and your roster is much more balanced (Anderson, Baynes, and Bairstow) ...you don't need all 5.

It's going to be very tough against any teams that have a good stretch four. Which means pretty much every single team in this upcoming worlds...

The other big difference is obviously the loss of Patty but despite his activity and aggression he makes loads of defensive mistakes, ESPECIALLY back then (he has improved by leaps and bounds on that end since then).

So yeah it's poor personnel decisions...which all falls back on the coach...i'll withhold judgment on the actual coaching until there is a larger sample size.

Valid points but I can't agree with you that defensive plays are premeditated especially during a pick and roll. I believe it comes down to the player IQ and whether they're following scouting reports on a players playmaking ability. You only recieve intructions from the coach but each play is played by the player if you're not making right decision then you're rightly subbed. We did struggle to rotate and collapse on the screener against Lithuania and were exploited numerous times so it's definitely not just a singular issue.

I agree our bigs aren't mobile enough (basically just Baynes and Jawaii), from what I've seen they have tended to hedge the ball handler but simply aren't quick enough to get back in the hole add the fact that our rotation was a little suspect it's just a recipe for easy buckets.

I too was all in for Jawaii, but he's yet to justify his selection. Every other player had just cause through form, game time etc except for himself. No one should be getting favors for a WC team which I now believe may have happened, given his current form. I hope that statement bites me on arse though! I'm still pushing for the big fella to do well!

We gave up 82ppg, 47% 2pfg shooting and 38% 3pfg. Our six opponents' overall averages were 80ppg, 50% 2pfg and 35% 3pfg. Those stats suggests we were around average.

not sure why nevill was not considered for the final team - it's so obvious now that we need rim protection, I thought he was great in the china series, perhaps falling out with lemanis or something !!

I don't think having simmons would gain much as it's defensive smarts that we are lacking, probably should have had him playing in the lead up games as it's probably hard to gauge from just training camp

If anything wortho should be in this team as a mobile defender and grunt man off the bench

Exum missed a few very open looks from 3. He seems to release the ball out of line with his eyes/head. So frustrating to watch a guy with his athletic gifts have poor shooting technique, as it hinders the effectiveness of the other parts of his game if defenders can just sag off on him.

Him and Goulding kind of have inverse limitations in their game: Goulding has better shooting form but lacks Exum's athleticism, and vice versa.

Thoughts on the first three games -

So disappointing with Jawai. I guess i was wrong in expecting the Taipain/NBA Jawai to show up. His fitness and athleticism have gone way down. He never used to be this slow. He's pretty much useless.

Simmons should've been picked. would've been a better option than Jawai based on these games.

Motum and Bairstow need as much court time as possible. Easily our best two bigs. Anderson has been pretty good also.

Dante needs to be more aggressive. When attacks and goes for the rim we easy get a good outside look or he gets 2 points at the rim.

Gibson has gotten waaaay too much playing time. Dante and Delly need to be the main ones playing pg. Gibson needs to be Mills circa 2012 and be on sideline waiving a towel while occasionally playing garbage minutes.

Goulding needs more playing time. One of the few players on the team with a consistent jump shot. Shooting is so vital in Fiba.

Newley hasn't been terrible which is surprising. Made some good shots and nice drives. Hasn't made bad decisions like he normally does.

Ingles has been pretty good like always.

But most importantly - our defense needs to improve! Giving them way to many open looks and easy lanes to the rim. If our defense doesn't get better we will struggle in this tourny.

My take, which is a pinch of salt because these games are about preparing, so we don't know the full story:

Baynes - has looked a bit lost out there at times, they haven't run any alleys for him yet, saving that for WC. That'll get him going.

Bairstow - nice energy, has the ability to operate from the elbow and hit mid-range. Solid.

Ingles - cruising at the moment, but his penetration is real nice. Class player. We need him to hit the jumper and pick up his D in Spain.

Exum - one moment a flash of brilliance, next moment lost or driving into help. Has the potential to make an impact if he can get his head around what's required. Like him in the press team.

Delly - very solid as per usual but hasn't shown anything knew to his game from 2012, which is un-Delly like! Hopefully that's still to come.

Jawai - passing nicely out of the post but so lost on defence. Lemanis needs to park him in the key and get guards to chase over the top of the screen. Under no circumstances should he guard a popper!

Andersen - solid player, you know what you get. Would be nice if a little tougher defensively but still, very comfortable with him on the court and hopefully his 3-ball is on come Spain.

Newley - doing everything he usually does right across the court and showing a bit more life offensively now he isn't just being parked in the corner.

Goulding - looks very comfortable and looking forward to him playing himself more into the rotation. The test will be the defence of course.

Gibson - solid, confirming his game has improved quite a bit. Running the offence well and defending solidly. I like he and Exum on together in the pressing team. Hopefully his shot keeps dropping.

Motum - has a great knack for finding cracks and scoring, but the rest of his game doesn't appear to be at this level yet. Still, that scoring punch is going to be handy at some point.

Broekhoff - hard to say much about the modern day Brad Sheridan, just does what he needs to do and doesn't stuff up.
