Name your best shooter regardless off level. By this I mean spot up and off the dribble.

Firstly I just wanna point out what an awesome topic this is. It's one that will create a lot of discussion from generally a positive point of view. This is the kinda stuff we should be seeing more of on here!

As for my opinion - I'd say Patty Mills would be toward the top, if not #1. Proven he can hit spot-up jumpers and shoot off the dribble (I believe I heard that the only guys on the Spurs with the absolute green light from Pop are Patty Mills and Danny Green). He's also shown that he can shoot well on the biggest stages (Olympics, NBA Finals)

The one and only PATTY MILLS. Was in top 5-10 in shooting percentages in NBA most of the year. He is a flat out beast.

Game 5 Nba championship. Biggest game on biggest stage. Patty absolutely lit it up in an arrogant display of shooting. Killed it year round too.

Patty Mills 45% career fg, 40% 3pt fg. Talk to me when you can find another player topping that in the best league in the world.

"Patty Mills 45% career fg, 40% 3pt fg. Talk to me when you can find another player topping that in the best league in the world."

I think the point is that we are identifying the best shooter. Just one attribute. Mills clearly has many other attributes that make him worthy of NBA rotation minutes.

Having point that out, I will only comment on Boomers level players: I'd rank our only two automatic open perimeter shooters as Mills and Broekhoff (based on his WC performance), with Goulding coming in behind. Off the dribble, I'd rate Mills and Goulding as our best since I haven't seen Broekhoff show this aspect of his shooting ability.

Great topic, especially given that this used to be a strength of Aussie players but we have slipped in this regard in the past decade with the retirement of players like Maher and Rillie.

Eddie Palubinskas was IMO the best Aussie shooter of all time. Andrew Gaze and Ian Davies not far behind.

As for current players, Patty, Goulding and Broekhoff.

Skip ahead to 5:40 and watch up to 8:00, he just takes over the game completely in an amazing finish to one of those classic Tigers/Magic matches.

Interesting that a few people are mentioning Shane Heal. No doubt that he had excellent range on his 3 point shot, but Maher has him beaten in terms of field goal and three point percentage over their NBL careers.

The Boomers had some awesome shooters in the 2000's with Gaze, Maher, Heal, Ricky Grace, Rillie and CJ Bruton...

This is a great topic but what I find the most amazing is that other than the post above which mentioned Ricky Grace, we have no other naturalised Australians and that is a good thing in my opinion but Derek Rucker was awesome when he found his ramge as my favourite naturalised.

I find it easy to trust someone like Andrew Parkinson and believe every team needs a swingman off the bench like him that can change a game on a few shots. Mike Mackay comes to mind also.

Everything I've read suggests that had more of us seen Edfie Palubiskas then we would all be singing his praise.

Werner Linde worth a mention, I know he goes back a little, but have been told he was a freak. I think he played for West Adelaide.
Ian Davies and Darryl Pearce were more streaky, I would have to say Patty Mills as one of the best now.
Still the guy who is an absolute legend would have to be Gaze. His catch and release was worth watching.

Micheal Johnson (Newcastle 1982-95 364 games) career 47% from the field and Mark Gaze nowhere near Andrew as an all round player but a pure jump shooter.

I know warm ups and shoot arounds shouldn't count but Peter Hill (ex Newcastle, Sydney and Gold Coast I think) was excellent. He very rarely missed during warm ups and people used to talk about his incredible strike rate at training. Sadly his in game % never really reflected this.

Both Heal and Gaze used to take a lot of shots under heavy defensive pressure, it would be interesting if those NBA Sportsvu cameras could have tracked them during their careers to see how their % would have changed comparing open looks and under defensive pressure.

Like Jimmer in the nba, great shooting doesn't mean much if you can't do enough of the other skills required to stay on the court (defend your positon, etc).

Oscar Foreman is quite good, especially for a big and I like to favour those with good %s from the longer 3pt line.

Werner Linde - outstanding shooter from the 60's and 70's. Had a myriad of shots, over, under, off balance. Could dictate to the defense and change the complexion of a game quickly. Rarity to miss a free throw and put up huge numbers before the 3 pt line introduced. Outstanding scorer over along period of time.

Eddy Palubinskas, automatic jump shot, amazing scores at national and international level. Top scorer at the Olympics is testimony to his scoring ability.

Ian Davies, another fantastic jump shot. Accurate, with an incredible release behind his head which was unblockable. Super efficient free throw shooter ( 90 percent) and top scorer at the Olympics.

The best of the lot...Andrew Gaze..super smart scorer who found ways to put up huge numbers in the NBL. You don't ave over 40 points per game in the NBL if you can't score. Could do it all, long threes, very long threes, car park threes! layups, twisting and turning shots against impossible pressure, fantastic foul shooter. Scored heavily for Australia as well and over a long period of time.

Honourable mentions: Michael Johnson, Darryl Pearce, Shane Heal, John Rillie, Brett Maher. Patty Mills.....maybe, but I dont think so!

I'm with LC, as I remember being blown away by Eddie P, Ian Davies and Drewey many times. Linde sounds like he might have pushed Eddie - time to hit YouTube, I reckon.

I've got the greatest of respect for Patty, and he's got such an explosive shot that he's hard to stop, but I'm sure we've had guys who had much better range as well as better percentage. John Rillie and Michael Johnson spring to mind.

It was asked of Andrew and Lindsay Gaze who was the best shooter they had ever seen and the both replied Eddie Kardas who played VBA state league for Geelong.
David Johnson who played for the Bendigo Braves in the 80's averaged over 50ppg, now that guy could flat out shoot.

What defines the best? FTs, 2s or 3s %? 2s can be skewed - some of the highest % were recorded in seasons by Uthoff & Wheeler. Here the best career 3s % appear to be from Penney & Maher. I'd be interested to see career % of Smyth & Radliffe who both had several seasons over 45%, Smyth with one >50% as did Foreman. I think though that anyone who saw Linde would probably rank none higher save perhaps Palubinskas.
