Big game. I am predicting a realistic medal chance still but will be tough with no easy games.

We need to beat all 3 group teams(Cuba, Korea, and Belarus) or we will struggle then on. A meeting in the 1/4's with Brazil, Spain or Czech Republic looks likely which means we will probably face usa in the semi's if we win through.

Belarus will be tough along with all of group A. Usa are odds on favourites
With griner, taurasi, Dupree, ogwumike and the like. Missing some big names but means nothing. Talent pool is enormous.

sorry may have missed it but where is LJ ? injured , retired?

LJ is injured again. We need to start looking for more mobile bigs to develop for the future or change our game to a fast transition style and go small with some mid bigs on the bench.. We have plenty of young outside red hot shooters to do this...

The future front court is looking something like this after rio.

PF Francis6'4/burton6'4/mijovic6'6
C Cambage6'8/bunton6'5

Maybe penaluna 25 and maybe scherf 18 although still very young. Not many others available for there positions.

Phillips, Taylor, Allen, Francis, tolo looks to be the best line up. Followed by Mitchell, snell, Jarry, hodges or burton, Richards. Lavey not a good start but will improve.

Jarry's defense all game was undeniably good and thats what the commentators were saying, yes she missed a few easy shots at the start (hasn't played a proper season in over a year and a half) but she didn't let it stop her making an impact defensively and once she got into the swing of things her shots sunk and that would be good for her confidence.

Missing a few easy shots doesn't mean she had a bad game, you guys need to learn the game of basketball if thats what your thinking.

jarry- so many turnovers, too many minutes, caint do a layup, spoiled it....otherwise pretty good.

Well done by the girls. Very impressed by Phillips, Taylor, Allen, Tolo. The rest did fine apart from Lavey, who prabably had stage-fright.

Anonymous I would say the 7 turnovers meant she had a bad game.

Lavey should not be there at all just not ready for this level, jarry.....funny how some see one thing others don't....thought she was shocking all round to be honest, watching her feet playing defence was torture, her player always managed to get to the basket, yet some say she played great defence .
Certainly wasn't the best game but a good win just the same, Joyce did rotate his team well though .

Good work on Jarry taking on the Andersen role. It's an important role and takes a lot of the heat off the other players on social media and message boards.

It was mentioned that she hasn't played much basketball the last few seasons. It looked at some stages like she hasn't played much basketball in her life. Some of the passes she attempted showed zero feel for the game. It was good to see her relax in the 4th and let the game come to her.

Can't question her effort and hustle.

She had a really nervous start offensively, but she had the second highest +/- so her turnovers obviously didn't hurt too badly. Her lead-up form was very good, so hopefully the butterflies are gone now.

Great start by the Opals, love the defensive pressure and the quick rotations, now just need to get the decision-making right in transition before the knockout rounds.

Jarry has cement feet. Mitchell was also a little off. She is a star but looked a little slow? Without the awesome start we may not have looked so good at 1/2 time. Cuba certainly looked to shoot long when they could. May have been forced to stay out of the paint. Come back soon Lauren! Belarus have a couple of good players out on maturity leave. May help us get through the initial phase..

I think commentators may be a little protective of jarry only because they know her story which not many people do and probably giving her a bit of credit after some injury time. She had a rough start, lots of nerves. Reckon she will settle into the games now like she did in fourth quarter.

Jarry still looks like that footy player that hasn't played much hoops in your domestic league.

Bec Allen looks like the better wing player.

If Jarry is going to play minutes v the good teams I'd like to see her as the small ball post player.

Great win, their defence has looked great so far.

i think you guys are too critical of Jarry. She is 22 and the future of the Opals.

Had a great game 3 against Belarus.

Yes but they were not much of a challenge 42 point win at a worlds says it all.
Be interesting to see what happens when they face a good team

So far we know:
Phillips has been fantastic. Maybe a little unselfish at times.
Mitchell has been a nice backup to Phillips, but clearly lacks size.
Jarry has been building in confidence. Maybe could improve here one on one d.
Snell has been a very reliable 3 point shooter but not much else.
Allen has gone under the radar, probably deserves some more minutes.
Burton has been the biggest suprise, been solid in defence and running the floor well.
Tolo has been very active and overall pretty solid but not a great rebounder.
Richards has not looked like her normal self. Needed more time in the last few games.
Taylor has been amazing, probably our best player along with Phillips.
Hodges has been great on both ends. Just goes about her business.
Francis has been ok, but is capable of a lot more. Another who needed more minutes.
Lavey has shown she has great potential, a certainty for the future opals. Can't help but think that hurst would have been a better option for this campaign though.

Phillips / Mitchell / Lavey
Taylor / snell
jarry / Allen
Hodges / burton / Francis (playing 4-5)
Tolo / Richards

Still a strong effort from the opals.

The squad that should pay the U.S.

1 Phillips - best suited to taurasi or Whalen.
2 Taylor sg on off, sf on def best suited to mccoughtry or Moore.
3 Allen sf on off, sag on def (i would start Allen for her defence, rebounding and shooting - better match up for Moore sf or mccoughtry sg)
4 burton ( I would choose burton, much better defender and rebounder - most likely matched against ogwumike, Dupree or Stewart.
5 tolo - extremely hard job against griner and Charles.

Mitchell v bird - slower less physical pg suits Mitchell. Also defence on sims.
Lavey v bird, sims or Whalen.
Snell v Augustus/sims - sg vs sg's no surprise.
Jarry v Augustus or Moore - primarily a spot up shooter, doesn't drive too often suits jarry.
Francis/Richards v griner/Charles - needs a physical defender or a pest like tolo.
Hodges v Dupree - killer mid ranged shooter but not quick. Hodges to stay tight.

What's the story with Brendan Joyce and the chewing gum. He looks like a complete bogan and then has his shirt out. We are on the world stage peeps for the love of God I wish someone would say something to him. Lead from the top Brendan and be professional
