Another 33-point win!

2014 FIBA World Championships: Opals too polished for Korea

After winning their opening game of the 2014 FIBA World Championships against Cuba in Istanbul, Turkey, the Opals maintained their winning ways in easily accounting for Korea 87-54 and improving to an unblemished 2-0 record.

Given the poorer than expected results for the men how important is success here to protect Federal funding to the sport?

JArry hasn't had a good start.. and it isn't really a good enough excuse to say that she hasn't played a game in months. If she wasn't ready then she shouldn't have been selected. I can't see how she is starting over Snelly.
the errors that she is making are amateurish. fair enough she has good hustle, however I would hope that any player that hits the floor shows the same desire.

good luck to them for the rest of the tournament.

There appears to be an appalling lack of depth in world women's basketball.

Seems kinda inevitable when there's not many players being paid a living wage worldwide.

Same could have been said about men's basketball 20 years ago, and I think the depth in the women's game is on the improve.

USA, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Australia, China, Korea, Japan, Spain, Russia, France, Belarus, Czech Republic, Serbia and Turkey all have decent teams, while other countries like NZ, Italy, Taiwan, Puerto Rico and Argentina aren't terrible either.

What a performance, the Opals have just been superb defensively so far. Czech Republic or Canada in the QFs, and while few knockout games are easy you have to like that draw.

USA in the semi's though should be a stern test. How does FIBA schedule the top 2 ranked teams in the world in the same half of the draw? Crazy!

After a men's draw where 1 and 2 couldn't possibly meet before the final, that's a good question. Could the answer be in who's on the other side of the draw that might be wanted in the final?

So should FIBA be investigated for 'fixing' the schedule?! LOL!

paul, I'm no women's basketball expert, but it appears to be USA, Aus and Spain, then a BIG gap back to Turkey and France on a tier below, then training fodder.

This is starting from a position where there are already 8 less teams competing than the men's comp.

Its a shame their first test looks likely to be against team USA.

The team looks really good although Belarus almost lost to Korea so they can't be that strong either (although you can only beat the teams put in front of you). With that said its hard to tell how good this team is.

Tolo is a better defender then Liz.

At London everyone seemed a little scared/intimitated of LJ and she put up a lot of contested shots.

To date not having those 2 hasn't affected the teams play. It may have even improved things with the team coming together using the "nobody believes in us mantra".

The team defence has been outstanding so far. Teams can't get into their offense and a lot of scores against the opals have been broken plays at the end of the shot clock.

Offense/ball movement has been great. Joyce has gone to some lineups with limited firepower and scoring has dried up in patches but in general they are getting great shots most times down the floor.

Jarry really got to the foul line last night and showed she can play/start.

I'm concerned against a top tier defense that she tries to do too much which could lead to turnovers / getting blocked against Griner/Charles. Although if she is not being aggressive its probably not worth having her out there.

Erin is awesome.

XY, in the men's there is a decent gap after the USA and Spain, but that doesn't mean there isn't good depth, it just means there are standout teams.
