Bad signs for Free-to-Air coverage

Quote from Fairfax: "The broadcaster is also expected to significantly cut back its coverage of televised local sport following a decision to sell off its expensive fleet of outside broadcasting vans.

While the ABC could hire vans from the private sector to film local sport, sources said this would be uneconomic in most cases.

The ABC has already cut back on local sporting broadcasts in recent years but continues to air local Australian Rules games in Victoria, Western Australian, the Northern Territory, as well as rugby union games in NSW.

Time for the Basketball community to get behind Aunty and try and reverse some of the budget cuts. Add this to the death of the Community free to air channels as bandwidth gets sold off to the telcos, we are in for a bumpy ride!

Sorry but what is going on at the ABC. Each year we the taxpayer fund them yet now they are crying so poor they are selling OB vans? Come on what is going on what a rort.

Look at SBS it started off as a joke in 1979 and look what they have become, they are mostly self sufficient now with ads and commercial businesses like World Movies channel. Yet what do the ABC do? they just continue to sponge off tax and complain when it isn't enough and now are so desperate they are selling of OUR funded assets? What a joke get rid of the TV side of ABC it clearly is useless and doesn't work. No one watches it anyway, waste of time.

You are aware the government, specifically the Minister for Communications, Malcolm Turnbull, publically admitted today they will be cutting funding to the ABC...

The selling off of non-core activity and facilities was recommended by the Minister's committee....the board has been left with little option. The same is happening at SBS.

I am going to throw this out there, happy for any feedback or criticism if it is constructive, but could the NBL not just go out there and purchase the equipment and do it all on NBL.Tv?

Or is that asking too much>

still the ABC cutback but continue to air VFL, WAFL, NSWRU etc. which is a waste, the old aussie rules and rugby boys at ABC still taking care of themselves, let's face it these are state leagues no one cares about yet they are never cut!

"Sorry but what is going on at the ABC."

The Govt cut their funding and canceled contracts to the value of $264 mill earlier this year. They also foreshadowed cuts of around $120 mill over 4 years.

Now they're looking to fund this Middle East deployment and their new intelligence measures, which amounts to $500 mill and $630 mill respectively.

The ABC deserves all of the cuts it gets. Turn it on and they are all left wingers trying to preach their garbage on the taxpayers dime.
