BJ Anthony out for the season

BJ Anthony knew he was in trouble even before he hit the floor.

The Adelaide 36ers' back-up forward was having a break-out game against his former New Zealand Breakers team-mates before rupturing the Achilles tendon in his left foot with 5:29 left in the 74-81 loss at Adelaide Arena.

The injury means Anthony’s NBL season is over, tragic given the form of the Tall Blacks star who rattled off a 10-0 individual run in Sunday’s loss in which he produced 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds in just 15 minutes.
Sixers coach Joey Wright and club general manager Dean Parker today will meet to discuss whether to replace Anthony - former replacement Richie Edwards and import Daequon Montreal are options - or retain the current group.

Thought it at the time, just saw him go down by himself and thats generally a good indication of the injury. I doubt they replace him, i know we are still an outside chance at finals but is it worth the cash? Sad for BJ.

What little chance ADL had of making the playoffs is now gone. Probably the most under-rated player on your team.

He had a very good game and throughout the season had improved. I would think that Richie would be the injury fill in as he has been around the club, although, could one the DP's be used?

Doubt if DQ would get the nod to return

Feel bad for him.

By my calculations of the points cap Adelaide could bring in an import to replace but think they would go Edwards as he has been around the club and they would struggle to afford an import too.

It would be great to see DQ back but how would it be possible they would have enough points cap to fit him back in?

As others have said it will probably be Richie.

Also, this is just a huge loss for the 6ers bench. BJ put in 15min of the finest action I've seen out him on Sunday and to have this happen to him is just tragic. You can never tell how a guy this big can comeback from such an injury, hopefully Creek and Peach can give him some advice and he can come back solid. Real sorry for him, from everything I hear, he is one of the most popular guys in the team, just a really great guy.

Sad news on his injury but it happens unfortunately, hopefully he can rehab it right and get back on the court asap.

BJ is hard to replace he is tough and strong.

Given our position five wins out of fourth place we would need to to better than just replace him. Do the sixers have the funds to get creative here or is it season done?

Maybe we could drop someone else as well.

Something really creative might fill some more seats and add a few dollars to the mix.

Why was Montreal cut?
And given those reasons (whatever they were) would they want him back?

How would Adelaide view their season at this stage?
Hypothetically, scour the world for somebody who's just finished playing in some league somewhere and who's looking for a short contract. It could give the Sixers the oomph they need.

Problem is its hard to see them overhauling Melbourne (and Sydney) in the run home. United will probably finish around 15 wins, and it would be hard for Adelaide to match that. Also have to wonder how quickly they could the magical import.

I suspect they will go the cheapest option, and just look to salvage what they can from this season.

Montreal/Motum was effectively the replacement for DJ.

Really they should cut Wilson, no need for his style of play at his position, and use the points, playing time created to get a solid import that can be a game breaker. But of course that won't happen, and someone mediocre will come in on the cheap.... sigh.

What if we cut Crawford. He played some good minutes sunday but hasn't really performed well enough this season. I dont think he's earned a spot next season.

If we could fit in a solid import and keep wilson for controlled minutes off the bench that would be a huge plus.

Needless to say Wilson might need to find greener pastures next season.

If that doesnt work then I agree totally with you cut Wilson!!!

Crawford has been solid when given some actual minutes. Unlike Wilson, when on, defenders have to respect his range and can't sag off him. Also savvy veteran who has does well off the court in the locker room. Wilson is the one clogging the offence for mine, and for many others who have taken notice. He started so well against the Breakers playing D and just fitting in, then when it got down a little, he just forced his way and individual will on things in the 4th. Game was probs already gone but it just got ugly and predictable towards the end.

Mahersy called it during the telecast with his recollection of Mitch Creek's injury.

I wish BJ the best with his recovery and hope he can make it back onto the hardwood. I feared the worst when he went down. I'm guessing he's in good company with Mitch being able to provide personal insight into the recovery process (and showing that one can recover from such an injury).

I'm assuming Dave Gruber loyalties still bind him to Wollongong, but surely the Hawks would/should encourage him to seek whatever opportunities might be available.

The big question is will the Sixers go for another player at this point; I suspect they won't.

All the best BJ.

The season is well and truly alive and worth fighting for.

However, not if it is going to cause the club financial stress.

This team can get into the playoffs as is now or go Edwards for a cheap option.

Not sure if bringing in a stud (at stud prices) will do much good. Motum has taken quite a bit of time to fit in. To risk that money Vs the potential for lower return, I would lean towards growing closer as a group and keeping the money (we will need it next year to pay for Motum).

Talk of getting rid of Wilson is pure suicide.

Wilson keeps this team going, getting rid of him means SOLE reliance on Gibbo who has for the most part of the season played disinterested.

Not sure what is going on, but Gibbo has not kept the opposition defence honest very much, happy to stay at the perimetre and pass off to the next guy.

I'm not expecting Gibbo to be the perfect guard, but if you are going to rely solely on him, he better be bringing more than just this.

I'm certainly not a 36ers fan by any stretch but I have absolutely loved what BJ has given us viewers this year... Easily the most underrated player at 36ers... About as underrated as Creek is overrated!

I wish we could take BJ's will, toughness and fight and insert it around other players in the league... They'd be twice as good!

Loughton, Weigh, Steindl, Caddee, Barlow I'm looking T you in particular but I think we all can play this game!

Get well soon BJ and I look forward to you banging inside the key again soon

That stat comparing Crawfords percenatage compared to Wilson's, doesn't show the effect of Pc's defender having to stay at home on him which allows more space for the big to operate. You can sag off Wilson, he wants to penetrate.

If someone could get Crawford a half decent look that 35% would go up. Also if the coach gave him some extended time on the court. It's a very easy team to defend just close up the lanes. Unless teys or Gibbo get hot we haven't got anyone who can shoot. Dq wouldn't be the worst option least he can shoot.
I would start Luke, peach, dq, Crawford and Gibbo and start shooting the ball for something different

I think the difference though Paul is that Crawford has had many seasons over his career where he has shot above 40%, so the potential is there to get really hot, whereas Wilson is shooting as well as he ever could. Crawford is a pure shooter having a down year (or maybe it's just that he is done), Wilson's shot is more funky.

Most NBL coaches are generally not great at leveraging the advantage of having deadeye shooters on the floor. They just let them hang out around the perimeter and hope that they will get open shots while someone runs another high P&R.

36'ers player profiles....

"Peter Crawford is an NBL veteran and quality outside shooter. Crawford started his career in Townsville before transfering to Perth and then back to Townsville before ending up in Adelaide this season.
A smart 193cm (6' 4") guard can take it to the rack and doesn't need much time to knock down the 3."

Wilson "One of the most exciting players to come to Australia in recent years.
He has electrifying skills that entertain the crowd with dribbling, passing or scoring he has the complete game.
After finishing college at Albany, Jamar played professionally in Belgium and Finland before coming to Australia where he has played three seasons with the Cairns Taipans."

PC's description is as suggested accurate from about 2012 and he is still useful in short bursts. I dont think he is up to serious minutes in a competitive finals side. He is at 34 probably good value for money though.

Wilson's profile needs to be rewritten and he is in his 30's now.

I wonder what Scott Christopherson is doing these days?

Seriously though, for the amount of time BJ gets on the court he always puts in his best effort, even if overmatched. Hopefully he makes a full recovery from this.

And Kobe24.....can't argue with you about Wilson. He may be leading the 36ers in scoring, but as a point guard the guy is just too selfish. He doesn't look to create for his team mates, he looks to create for himself. And if he can't create for himself he goes back to his old standard of dribbling the ball at the top of the key until there is 5 seconds left on the clock then he tries to drive against opposition bigs and it rarely pays off. The rest of the 36ers only seem to get the scoreboard ticking over when he is on the bench either being rested or out injured.

Cairns fans found out quickly what 36ers fans had been saying for 2 years when Stephen Weigh moved there. Talented player, but simply doesn't have the on-court work ethic to be a major player.

Sadly, some of us are now seeing the situation in reverse. 36ers fans are now seeing why Taipans fans weren't all that upset over losing Wilson. Yes he has a better work ethic than Weigh does.....but there is a reason Wilson never led them to the playoffs. And where are Cairns on the current NBL ladder compared to Adelaide.....?

Unfortunately, Wilson's game is too self-orientated for him to be an effective PG and he's too small to be a good SG. I can't see the 36ers cutting Wilson until the end of the season, but I for one wouldn't be too upset if they came out later today and said that they were letting him go. Then maybe we'd get to play as a team like we have in the games when he's been out injured.

Depending on costs, should go with Montreal. I think Gruber might be heading back to the US anyway.

Otherwise, I reckon finals is a long shot as of the last couple of results and they should just put time into Johns, Daly, Teys, etc.

Had Melbourne lost one or both of the Sydney or Wollongong OT games, and Adelaide won a recent game, it might've been worth the gamble. But hard to make up that gap now.

Finals are still a real possibility, but they need to beat Melbourne this weekend. Melb then have an NZ-Perth road double the weekend after so it could get tight quickly, but the 36ers have to win this weekend first or it will take a minor miracle.

So if we cant beat melbourne without a replacement the ceo will be satisfied to play a weakened side for the rest of the season probably losing ticket sales and not providing members that for which they have already paid.

If they had the cash it would be awesome to offer a NBDL gun player $150-200k for 2 months.
The player would still be able to go back to the NBDL for the last 5-6 weeks of that comp for more NBA exposure.

Players like
Andre Emmett
Damien Wilkins
Earl Barron

Eric Griffin or Doron Lamb from the Texas Legends would be exciting as well, Griffin is an athletic freak.

Pity it won't happen, but one can dream :)
