Sporn awarded Medal of the Order of Australia

ABC text below:

Dr Crowley's passion for women's sport is one she shares with another woman on the honours list, Rachael Sporn, who has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia.

Ms Sporn said winning three Olympic medals with the Opals was a career highlight, as was playing for the Adelaide Lightning.

"We had such great success in the '90s and I really think we put women's basketball on the map in South Australia," she said.

"Atlanta's so special because we won our first Olympic medal. Sydney, home Olympics, how can you top that, and then Athens was amazing too because I was a mum and it was my final international game ever."

Her career in basketball has seen Ms Sporn become a campaigner for women's sport.

She said was important women's sport received the same exposure as men's.

"I just think we need to keep campaigning about the importance of women's sport getting enough media exposure and just keep fighting for that because we keep on producing wonderful champions who compete on the world stage and do so well," she said.

"But just not I guess the recognition that we believe they deserve."
