How does the Playoff structure work this year?
is it Semi's, with winner's progressing to the Championship game?

With a top 4 it can't be any other way. The winners of the Semis go through, the losers can try again in 2015-16.

There is another way they could do it, which would also extend the series longer. Its the same format as the WAFL (im from WA so its probably the same in SA etc) and its done like this:

1v2 in the 1st Semi Final - Winner to the grand final.

3v4 in the Elimination Final - Winner to play the loser of 1v2 in the 2nd Semi Final. Loser of 3v4 eliminated.

2nd Semi Final between the loser of 1v2 and winner of 3v4. Winner to the grand final.

Best of 3 series for each. I think will add interest and make the finals seem more substantial in my opinion.

That's also what the WNBL does, although in their case each stage is just a single game, just like the WAFL.
For single games I think that's the fairest format. As soon as you go to multi game series the standard semi finals - finals makes more sense.

The WAFL is steeped in a LOT of history, but I don't actually think the format is all that good.
Usually the GF is simply a replay of the SF, and the PF is just an annoying hiccup in the middle. Also, in the WAFL home-ground advantage is less of an issue. Travel is not a factor, and the finals are played at Subiaco (which isn't Subiaco's home ground.)
This year's Grand-Finalists, East Perth & Subi, are actually co-tenants at Leederville.

In the current NBL format, the team finishing second gets home-court advantage in the semis, under the WAFL format they would have to play the minor-premiers at their home.

The problem with a best of 5 GF is that it would become a scheduling and travel nightmare. Can you imagine say NZ and Perth criss-crossing the continent for 5 games???

Yeah, you'd do it 2-2-1, not 1-1-1-1-1. Pretty sure that's how the NBA did it back when the first round was only five games. And obviously the best-of-seven series are 2-2-1-1-1, not 1-1-1-1-1-1-1.

You could do best-of-five with the exact same travel as best-of-three.

The only drawback of that is the dramatically increased chance of the series ending with the away team winning.

The problem with 2-2-1 is that in series where home-court and travel is a big issue, a lot of series would end in 3 games: Away team gets pumped in the first two games, gets demoralised and falls over in the 3rd.
Keep in mind that the current 1-1-1 series came about because teams bitched about the previous 1-2.

Lets also remember, that for better or worse, this isn't the NBA where teams play whole seasons of multiple games per week.

Besides, realistically the season for 5 or 7 games series is TV revenue, and that is currently almost a non-issue with the NBL. Sure if Perth hosted 3 GF games, at 13,500+ per game, they would rake it in, but it wouldn't really help the teams with smaller attendances.
