ABC will not broadcast WNBL semis live on FTA

Live on iView only.

The ABC has pushed the WNBL semi-finals back to a delayed TV broadcast as the network prepares to jettison live women's sport.

With one round to go in its regular season and with clubs preparing for semi-finals on the weekend of February 20-22, the WNBL notified clubs late last week that the national broadcaster would only be showing the semi-finals live on the internet via ABC iView then show a replay later in the evening. This is believed to be due to ABC1's broadcast of the women's Australian Open at Royal Melbourne from February 19-22.

The national broadcaster, which dropped live broadcasts of the WNBL and W-League soccer competition last November due to federal government budget cuts, has also demanded the WNBL move its scheduled preliminary final and grand final from Sunday to Saturday to fit into its preferred broadcast schedule.

It's understood ABC Sport has lobbied ABC management to show the semi-finals live on ABC2 or ABC3 but in both cases was told no.
Moore said he had worked productively with ABC Sport to find a way to show the WNBL semi-finals on live national television but their ideas kept being knocked back.

Such a shame.. years and years of broadcast and quality promotion of such a great league now looks to be thrown out the window for what.. Golf? ABC management needs a kick up the pants for sure. Love the fact they are behind womens golf and supporting it, but why not use ABC 2? Canning one sport for another doesn't do much for me.

I don't know about any other teams or arenas, but the three in victoria have had fantastic crowds and a lot of interest so it's not like the want for WNBL content is on the decline - it's on the rise!

Hopefully with the feelings that are being directed to the ABC, another company / channel may see the passion and love for the league we have a realise how much of an asset it is to have on their screens.

Next year you all will be begging for any television coverage - live or delayed.

It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing.

Surely viewers cant be an issue, I remember mid season where the WNBL game brought in more viewers than the same NBL game that week. Such a shame this is happening to the league, hopefully they can move to another FTA network

So why on earth would they drop WNBL for Womens Golf? Must be a reason? Money? Marketing? Sponsorship dollars? Viewers? Demographic? What is it?

Time the wnbl started to use its brains and hit the equality button. All they need to do is show how discrimination is raising its ugly head with the axing of 'womens' spirt not men's and how many mens sports are covered by ABC (and other TV networks) compared to women's sports, regardless of the audience, in this day and age they would have a very very strong case against the ABC, maybe wnbl need some 'balls' for want of a better discription

Anonymous, you want to play the "equality" card? The women's basketball originally got bumped for WOMENS golf!
Next year, pretty much all the state football leagues (you know, that men play) the ABC have been showing have been cut too.

But hey, you go play that discrimination card giiiirl...
