Playing Overseas / Boomers Selection

Does playing overseas increase your chance of making the Boomers squad? Are players like Motum better off staying away from the NBL in order to be selected for the Boomers?

Our main Boomers players over the years that have played in the NBL are Gibbo and Wortho.

With Motum returning to the league and struggling initially it made me wonder. Seeing him play ever week gives everyone a chance to highlight a players weaknesses. Kind of like a college player staying four years instead of leaving as a freshman with the potential tag.

If David Andersen didn't have the euro passport and played some years in the NBL would he have had the international career that he has had or would his deficiencies in defense, post play and rim protection been too obvious by seeing him week after week.

Some of the shine was taken off Patty Mills at the time he returned with the flop and some bad shooting games which made people question his talent. Although his play since then has proven that incorrect.

Staying away from the NBL didn't really help Kickert with gaining international selection. Although I wonder if Damo had a few years playing a solid role with a euro cup squad if his positives would have been thought about more with selection rather then what he takes off the table on the offensive end.

Goulding was probably the opposite. With questions about his defence questioned regulary during his time in the NBL although now that he has moved abroad he appears to be a automatic inclusion in any team.

Maric is probably the other player I forgot to mention. If he played NBL and been to slow and not suited for the league would he have been considered when he was.

They still go to a camp where all but the locks are competing anyway. That usually sorts them out.

I don't see Motum being in the NBL in any way hampering his Boomers chances. The guy is a gun who very narrowly missed a spot on the Jazz and I think Lemanis will be very aware of that. Put it this way, if you are beasting in the NBL, you will get noticed. But if you are just floating along not adding much, you are better off floating along in Europe than you are in the NBL for Boomers recognition. However, if you are floating along in Europe, you are likely a better player than a player just floating along in the NBL - If that makes sense. Motum will be in the Boomers squad, and I assume the team. I also think Blanchfield, Martin, Gibbo, Petrie will be in the squad too. For the Qualifiers, we may have a more specialised team than we will for the olympics.

I don't know but I suspect that if they're playing in the NBA then they automatically come under strong consideration, similarly with the good Euro leagues.

If you're in the NBL, I imagine that you would really need to be dominating to get similar consideration. But (as I think GWB was saying) if you're good enough then you WILL be.

I don't see "narrowly missing" a spot with the Jazz as being a feather in Motum's cap. He wasn't good enough for the NBA, and we'll never really know any more than that. If he was mediocre in the NBL, then that would be all she wrote.
But he dominates, one of the top scorers and re-bounders. That will get him noticed, and give him the opportunity to be considered.
I'd certainly have him in my all-star team.
(Whether that's enough, I don't know enough about our players in the NBA and Europe to say.)

I cant see the lineup changing Much from this.

Mills 1/2
Delly 1
Exum 1/2
Broekhoff 2/3
Ingles 3/2
Newley 3/2
Simmons 3/4
Bairstow 4/5
Motum 4
Bogut 5
Baynes 5/4

1 other. Not sure.. People have said Petrie, blanchfield, Steindl, Ogilvy, Jois, Goulding etc. who knows...

Kind of hypothetical although - if Blanchfield comes into camp and outworks Broekhoff and Newley I'm guessing he still needs a little luck to get that last spot.

An example is Lucas Walker who by all reports killed it a Boomers camp and was a chance at the world champs team. He plays another season in the NBL and takes a step back somewhat due to form, although a few things out of his control (coaching changes, crowded position).

He may have been better off trying to get out of sight at that point so he holds that position in the group. I'd say at 30 and with the year he has had he's out of the loop now.

It does kind of seem that there is usually one token spot for an NBL player.

Forgive my ignorance on this subject.
As I understand it, we need to beat NZ this year to qualify for the Olympics?

Will we have a "full" squad available for that?
Are the TB's a chance to knock us off?

Dazz without Bogut Aus will struggle to guard Adams. Patty will be troublesome for NZ though

Definately think blanchfield has the best chance of pushing for a spot if he continues to improve, third highest scorer in nbl and 8 th highest rebounder amount Australians. Has improved his ball handling, ability to get to the hoop and finish, defence and shooting the three with confidence. He has the tools to replace Newley, brockoff or Goulding, brings everything Newley does except experience and possibly a better shooter. More versatile offensively than brockoff and bigger better defender than Goulding, just has to do it in camp. Unless of course drmic beats him to it.

Blanchfield could possibly knock out Newley, but I wouldnt want him to knock out Goulding or Broekhoff. Both are better shooters and scorers than Blanchfield.

Was Todd Blanchfield in the last Boomers squad?

Newley and Broekhoff BY FAR the best performed Aussies in Europe this past season. Both have been in outstanding form. Newley has generally been shooting the ball very well - Broekhoff averaging around 50% from downtown!

Goulding started off in promising fashion but has really tapered off lately and now comes off the bench for Zaragoza in Spain.

Andersen now playing a limited role on his French team.

Jawai and Maric are providing back up minutes off the bench in Spain and turkey respectively.

AJ Ogilvy has just returned from injury with Spanish side Manresa.

Goulding is no guarantee with his performances so far in Europe. He is a liability on the other end of the floor for sure. We need someone who is skilled on both ends or at least someone that's gonna give his all.

Will we get to the point in the next 5-10 years that a player with an nba contract won't be an automatic inclusion? Hopefully we have 12+ players to choose from.

It sounds silly now although at the World Champs I was under the impression that Dante's game really didn't suit the international style of play, a Rondo type comparison.
