Boti: WNBL will announce Brisbane team on Friday

... the WNBL and Basketball Australia is preparing to announce the new team out of south-east Queensland.

It won't be the Sting, the outfit proposed by former Logan Thunder coach and driver Jason Chainey.

Instead BA will be returning a WNBL presence to Brisbane and its immediate surrounds to Heal's group.

Does anyone know why is Heal suddenly interested in the WNBL? Has anything been said about his rationale behind trying to get this franchise up and running?

Wants a job in basketball, but might have no chance of coaching in the NBL again?

Yeah I'm thinking the daughter angle is more than a coincidence.
Great to see the WNBL back in Brisbane though.
Now we need some good news out of Adelaide and Bendigo.

needs to be called Blazers

the $ would be better off spent on an NBL team though.

Would there be any advocacy for the Blazers name these days? They're a long time gone. Most would assume it's a ploy to try to capitalise on the recent GC Blaze name, IMO.

I think they should make a complete restructure of the Nbl and wnbl and make it similar to the a league/w league setup. Same management, uniforms, branding, merchandise, marketing etc, etc. Youth development also... Same venue.

Melbourne teams men and women (made from United, boomers and Bendigo)
Sydney team (from kings and flames)
Adelaide team (from 36ers and lightning)
Perth team (from wildcats and waves)
Brisbane team (from bullets and new wnbl side)
Townsville team (crocs and fire)
Nz/Auckland team (breakers and new wnbl side)

Future
South melbourne team (from old dragons side and rangers)
Canberra team (old cannons side and capitals)
Wellington team (two new sides)

Which makes 2 from vic, 2 from nsw, 2 from qld, 2 from nz, 1 from sa, 1 from wa.

10nbl/wnbl sides...
Makes sense by population per state also and size of domestic programs.

Potentially a Hobart and Darwin side in the future. 12 teams.

What do u reckon?

No thank you. Been there, done that!

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, we saw each team get dumped by their NBL counterparts and have to build from close to the ground up (in some cases, i.e. the Tigers, the team folded and a lot of others came close too).

The WNBL isn't perfect, but it's been standing it's own and can do better than being a curtain raiser for the men. I don't see what the incentive is for WNBL teams to want to go to this model, when they will always be the second fiddle.

Forgot to add to my post, your proposed new structure has initially cut out two of the more financially stable clubs that generated significant sponsorship dollars (Rangers and Capitals)!

Didn't cut them out at all....
If cannons/capitals
If South dragons/Rangers

Like the w league. Canberra United have no male soccer team, but there are plans in place.

Leave the women's league alone they certainly do not need the men's nbl to set an example, the wnbl leads by Ample a far better platform and development arena than any of the nbl teams. What NBL team do you see having juniors in their program the way Melbourne and Rangers do. rangers would be the most stable financially of all WNBL teams, and with a junior program to feed it, unlike any other program with perhaps the exception of Bendigo.

If anything, it may be the WNBL team taking the lead (Say Townsville Fire taking over the Crocs and renaming them the Townsville Inferno!).
