Townsville have backers if NBL guarantee them spot

Some good news on the Crocs front.

Group of businessmen willing to dip into their pockets to help out providing NBL guarantees them a spot.

"The group, lead by QSafe Solutions principal Andrew Gisinger, is prepared to inject cash into the club and take over the board under a deed of company arrangement."

and...

""I was happy to put in some money to cover the cash flow and go to market early," Mr Gisinger said.

“However, there's no way you can ask people for money if they don’t know what the league is going to look like.”

Crocodiles general manager Jeremy Moffat said the club needed assurances from the NBL before the group could help address cashflow issues."

And now we get to see just how keen the NBL is for TVL to continue to be part of the league.

If they are financial then there shouldn't be a problem.

Oh Andrew, don't throw your good money after bad. Barrier reef basketball knew when to pull the plug. Don't make the same mistake.

The more Brisbane looks like getting up the more Townsville's chances diminish. The NBL DON'T want them in the league.

If they can stand on their own two feet financially then I don't see why the NBL would prefer to have them out of the league. What would be the thinking behind that?
Provided the money is right, surely an expanded league is better?

Seems like a Mexican standoff.

Why wouldn't NBL guarantee a spot to an existing club?

Because they limp from year to year and apply bandaid measures. The risk is that one year these bandaids don't stick at all, and they are finished giving more negative fodder for the media.

The problem is the league hasn't stepped in and mandated they use the same principles Cairns used to become a viable community club...

This club can be viable, but they cannot be trusted to run themselves for the time being.

If they're not vital for the league and cannot be trusted to run themselves, and the league has another option, then...

To run a competition the NBL needs competitive teams. Having a team that has to go searching for cheap options, and then still can't afford to pay them, is in nobody's best interests. I thought Townsville looked ok for large parts of this year, but they wouldn't want to get any worse.

At the same time, the league needs viable sustainable organisations. The NBL could play with 6 teams, or 7, or 8. What they CAN'T do is plan a season and sell a TV deal, not knowing how many teams they will have or whether a team will last out the season. Harsh reality is that they are better off losing TSV and running with 7, than trying to run with 8, and having TSV fall over every year, or worse bail in the middle of a season.

The AFL signed a megabucks TV deal, guaranteeing 9 games a round including a game a week in Adelaide. They were then forced to step in and bailout Port Adelaide. The NBL doesn't have the cash reserves to do that.

To be honest, this whole thing is starting to smell. TSV doesn't need another another 2 bob rescue that will allow them to crawl their way into another season. They need the bucks to guarantee a decent showing for at least a couple of years, and if these backers don't have that sort of money, then they should just leave well enough alone.
