Basketball Australia CEO on Lightning, NBL

New Basketball Australia CEO Anthony Moore in Adelaide today speaking at the Free Throw Foundation's fundraiser.

That is still to come but more pressing for Moore and BA, which administers the WNBL, is the plight of Adelaide Lightning, the league's five-time champion presently without ownership.

Consultant Mark Williamson, in conjunction with BasketballSA, has helped launch "Lightning Surge", a website where anyone who supports or wants to see the club continue, can register.

“Right now, we need about $200,000 to have Lightning in the competition next season,” said Moore, in Adelaide Friday as key speaker for the Free Throw Foundation’s fundraising lunch.

“I think people believe it will take millions of dollars but we’re just $200,000 short at present.

“Now whether that’s four by $50,000, five by $40,000, 20 by $10,000 or someone with $200,000, we believe it can be done.

“I can’t fathom a WNBL without Adelaide Lightning and nor should South Australia.”

Moore said Australia needed a strong, sustainable NBL competition and will meet with its new chairman Graeme Wade and interim CEO Bret Mactavish on Monday to offer any assistance to help the league, currently plagued by two of its clubs being in voluntary administration.

Bogut did play here, in 2006, and the place didn't get close to a sellout. Would be great to get him back again, though.

He also talked about the new TV deal for WNBL to be one where BA produce the content and then supply to a commercial station for broadcasting. Seems like a practical solution.

Interesting that the Australian Boomers will be playing at Rod Laver Arena.

They must be hopeful of a big crowd.

I wonder which of our NBA Aussie players will be suiting up for this one?
