U19 Emu's squad named

A 16-man squad has been named for the Australian U19 Men's squad in preparation for the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship in Heraklion, Greece later this year.

As expected, no Simmons, Maker, Humphries, but also no Adel or Bolden either as names that stand out.

Hey LC

Great read (as always) and up before BA even.

I see Olgun didn't mention Adel & Bolden in the article. Is it more of an issue of timing (end of US school year) and distance for this particular camp with Adel & Bolden (& possibly Humphries)?

its great to see William McDowell-White finally back in as I really like his style of play. It would seem there is a definite core of 9
Kyle Clark
Harry Froling
Tanner Krebs
William McDowell-White
Jack McVeigh
Jock Perry
Dejan Vasiljevic
Jack White
Tom Wilson

Then at the final camp and pre-championship games they could inject 3 more without compromising team play, such as

Adel, Bolden & Humphries

Olgun has updated the article.

Adel left for the States yesterday, should be back for the 2nd camp all going well. He has not ruled himself out.

We are unsure about Bolden, however the trio of Simmons, Maker & Humphries won't be a part of any portion of the U19 World's campaign.

What happened to Blagojevic? He missed U20 nationals with an injury. Will he recover in time to be included or will he miss the U19 worlds completely?

From looking at the list, most of these players seem "bottom age" with no Simmons, Bolden, Maker and Adel. (along with Healey, McKay, Dufflemeir, J Smith, etc who were in previous junior teams at this level). Not saying that the players picked aren't talented (which they are), I just expect if the majority of the team is younger come world's we may struggle against the more physical teams.

Can't understand the reasoning behind this squad selection.
Players can be turning 19 years of age this year.
Selection consists of 5 players turning 17 (1998), 7 players turning 18 (1997) and only 4 players turning 19 (1996 and top age).
There is a huge difference, both mentally and physically between 17 yo's and 19 yo's.
19 yo's from the European Powers and the USA will be able monster a lot of this group.
I understand that the group is extremely talented for their respective ages - it's just the physical maturity aspect that concerns me.
Would be interested to understand why so many younger players have been picked. Maybe selectors are getting a little carried away with the recent success of some of the Aussie junior mens teams.
Don't forget - this Aussie u19 mens team only just made it into these world titles by winning in the last seconds, the qualifier against New Zealand.

If you are top age for this worlds you rarely get a look in. Wrong age group prefer u17s who have been there before than the older players.

I know Gak was at the u17 worlds but I've never seen him play. What type of player is he? Better than froling or hunter?

If scherf is our number one centre, who's the best backup centre? Fareo(lsu) or mckay(st Mary's). Both same height and build. McKay has done better and state champs but fareo has had one year at college training/playing. (even though she didn't get many minutes) who would you take? Or would you take less front court players and add another guard/sf?

I see a.froling and smith playing the 4 the majority of the time, but 5 also.

Pf/c A.froling/smith/fareo
C Scherf/McKay
Another possibility... But would push out the shorter more mobile Hellessey Who has been a pretty solid player coming off the bench.

Emus u19 worlds group. (Canada will be tough to beat.)
Canada- narrin and Murray amongst many others.
Italy- good guards... Not too many good bigs.
Tunisia- dunno..

I think we will make top 7. Medal unlikely.
Usa, Serbia, Greece, Croatia, Canada, Spain, Australia.

Gems u19 worlds group. (Should get through fairly comfortably)
Korea- Ji Su park in the post.
Serbia- good guards and some big post players.
Brazil- same as above.

Top 3 for sure. bronze or silver a real possibility.
Usa, Spain, Australia.

Sucks that there ain't 2 Oceania spots available for the worlds and Olympics.
New Zealand deserved a place.
Hopefully join Asia with Oceania for 3 spots.
Which most likely means australia, nz and China through next time round.

Just look at the young talent they have in the post.
Adams 21 7'0
Loe 23 6'11
Salt 19 6'11
Wynyard 17 6'9-6'10
Timmons 17 6'10
Freeman 17 6'9-6'10
Fotu 21 6'8

Australia in comparison... (Known players with size and/or skill)
T.maker 7'1
Perry 7'1
Humphries 7'0
Malone 7'0
Acuil Joseph 7'0
Landale 6'11
Mathiang 6'10
Simmons 6'10
Bolden 6'10
M.maker 6'10
Froling 6'10

Picking from this squad I think the guards would be the best options available, but the bigs is a little thin.

G - DJ (97) / Wilson (97) / McDowell-White (98)
G - Krebs (96) / Clarke (97)
F - McVeigh (96) / J White (97)
F - Vague (96) / Froiling (98) / McCarthy (96)
C - Perry (97) / Hunter (96)

Missing out would be Hodgson (97), Gak (97), Glover (98) and Kenyon (98).

I hope that Bolden (96), Adel (96) and Blagojevic (96) are all available come World's. Likely replacements for McCarthy, J White and Clarke. Saying that J White and Clarke did both play a great game in the final of the U20 national champs. I think Jonah Bolden is really the key player that we need to play as the depth of the bigs is a little week.

@anon #338 if you want to make fair comparisons why are you including Kiwi NBA and internationals at 21-23 years of age, when all the Aussies mentioned are under 20 and either juniors in High School or first year of college at best?

I have no issue that NZ are strong in their bigs, but if you want to mention Adams, why not include Baynes and Bairstow?

Doesn't make sense brother...

I think some need to cool it and have some perspective and consideration for the powers that be.

BA can only select players that make themselves available for Camps and for the World's.

So, whilst I agree it is disappointing and would be great to have Simmons T. Maker, Bolden, Humphries, etc available.

The reality is they obviously haven't made themselves available for this Camp and it looks like some have made themselves unavailable for the World's.

At least BA are getting on with the job of trying to put a team together.

As for the 17 year olds - W White would be up to it, Obviously Humphries would be and you probably need Froling's size, not sure any of the others stand a realistic chance to get selected.

People also need to do some research:
The 2011 FIBA U19 Aus team contained 2 bottom age players. They finished 8th behind USA 7th.

The 2013 FIBA U19 Aus contained 5 bottom age players. Would have contained 7 if Mirko didn't get shot in the leg a couple of weeks before the World's and had Ben Simmons not gone to the USA. Incidentally Ben would have been double Bottom Age. They finished 4th behind Lithuania 3rd.

The 2015 U19 team looks like having 5-7 of last year's U17 team and why not? They are the best performed Aus U17 team so far.

Food for thought!

506 - thanks missed Boldon. He was double bottom age. That just adds weight to my post. With Mirko & Simmons, that would've been 8 bottom or double bottom age players. What I'm trying to say is there is nothing wrong with picking bottom age players.

Nothing wrong anon^, but if you want your posts to make sense of one another, so people can follow what you are saying it is easy enough to just choose an anonymous handle or nick name.

That way we need not bother trying to guess or post anon #222 or #223 etc...

Just some friendly advice not a cynical criticism. Those who post by logging on are known to the editor and can be identified easily, but of course we still remain anonymous to the majority, as you have stated.

Thanks Bear for the advice. I'll keep it mind. However, in this case I don't think "So people can follow what you are sying" applies.

I made one post before I got asked to sign up, and there were 34 Anonymous posts before my post.

I agree if someone (like you) continually contibutes to a theread then it is easier for others to follow their statements/opinions/arguments.

Back to topic

I was just stating BA have moved on. Players have made themselves unavailable for the Camp and/or the World's, and they're entitled to do so. BA has to do something and they've chosen a squad.

Thanks.
