It was rumoured awhile back Wortho was leaving surprised though that Kickert not picking up his option hasn't generated discussion. Corletto has quit to take up playing the UK too.

Barlow & Tomlinson the only players contracted to Melb Utd next season.

OK, so whats the dirty secret Melb has?

It's not sounding like just normal player movements IMO.

With all the talk late last season, it is no surprise that there would be an exodus from United.

Stats wise McRae was the best player for United. He had the 2nd higest PER in the league which is rare for a guard although watching him play it just didn't work. Too mich iso, too many contested shots and lazy D.

Wortho was awesome the 1st half of the season. He was in shape, efficient and active. He seemed to tire during the season and just didn't look as good towards the end, not sure if he was hurt or if there was a diet change (maybe back on the beers), although he was was poor the second half of the year.

United rankings;
Kickert
McRae (begrudgingly)
Wortho

If Wortho has been your highest paid player for quite a number of years and you haven't had any playoff success its fine to move him on and try something else.

I thought they might move wortho on, they need too keep Kickett now and play him as the stretch 4 and Walker as the back up with a good import 5. The 3 and 4 was a log jam for United last year

The wrong player for U to lose. He was the only guy who played his guts out every night. The rest played with a misplaced sense of entitlement.

Weigh is never going to be a great player. I wouldn't bother signing him for anything but an 8th man spot.

"Off to Europe according to Boti"

I don't think Wortho is really cut out for Europe, that stint in Russia didn't go so well.

Europe it is!

"Worthington's good friend and former United coach Chris Anstey tweeted today: "Wow! Amazed at the reason so many great people leave @MelbUnitedHQ. Gutted to see @Wortho33 join list of people not wanted by front office"

Interesting indeed.

It sounds like United offered him a contract for less then what he is used to getting paid.

Wortho declined as he still thinks its 2008.

I'm thinking after Europe doesn't work out he will be back as an import replacement later this season.

Exodus of players from United but we want their owner to fund the league? Ok then.

We need anyone to fund the league. I would prefer it was someone not attached to United but beggars cant be choosers. They didn't really do badly when it came to marketing and fans, it was just terrible on court and they did disenfranchise many people.

Pretty sure Wortho hasn't played in Russia, his stints were in Germany and the Adriatic League, where he was very effective before injuring his shoulder. Will be interested to see if there are still any decent offers for him there as an import.

Probably last chance for him to get a really good pay packet at the age of 31.Maybe one of the mid size European leagues would be a good fit.

Adriatic League is a good fit for Wortho. Similar standard to NBL and also similarities in the size of athlete there.

Wortho was United's most active player in the media and was in essence the face of the team in Melbourne.

Wortho was United's best player early last season. Later in the year, that mantle was passed to McRae.

He was a good player but it’s all about value. We can’t talk dollars here because we don’t know the figures.

This gives United an opportunity to reshuffle their team and solve the number one problem inherent in last year’s roster: It was a donut team.

Sign a legit 5 man to add some rim protection and muscle. Someone like Ibekwe. Your 4 and 5 spots are then taken up by Ibekwe (or similar), Patton, Kickert and Walker. If you want to go small or spread the floor then you could still play Kickert at the 5 occasionally with Walker at the 4, or even play small ball with Barlow or Odigie at the 4.

Kickert can obviously play the 4 on offense, so the main query becomes Kickert’s defense at the 4 but hey, I’d rather him get beaten off the dribble on the perimeter than get beaten up in the paint like he was last season. And apart from the actual defense, he just doesn’t give enough grunt, physicality and rebounding to anchor the D from the paint.

Potential team:
Ibekwe/Patton
Kickert/Walker
Barlow/Odigie
??/??
??/Tomlinson

Ins: Ibekwe, ???, ???, ???
Outs: Wortho, Corletto, McRae, Dennis

But most importantly, get a coach who will pull them all into line, get them buying into their individual roles, understanding who's the boss (the coach....) and not putting up with BS (although it must be said, a lot of the BS is gone with those outs).

Just remembered they already got a new coach

He's an older guy who's been in basketball for a long time so hopefully he's experienced at doing exactly what needs to be done with this group. A change in attitude and a new culture.

I like the look of LV's frontcourt. United need a lot more out of Barlow this year as well. So realistically Melbourne need a good Australian guard with Tomlinson as the back up and an import guard.

Wortho had a big cut made to his salary in the new United offer.
Kings were trying to put a package together but the actual dollars weren't high enough. Lots of extras but obviously not the right ones.
His kids are near school age, this is a tough position to find himself in.

Blanchfield is the melbourne signing.
Cairns hoping to pick Wortho up hence the non signing of weigh yet if wortho doesn't go to cairns weigh will be resigned.
Sydney Will sign AJ Ogilviy or Julian Khazzouh.
Rhys carter will be in melbourne.

wrapped about the Blanchfield signing. More efficient, younger and plenty more upside than wortho.
Carter would be another great pick up if true as he just brings that spark off the bench along with great defensive intensity

Blanchfield's a good player but he brings a skill set that is similar to Barlow, Odigie and Walker.

Blanchfield probably has more upside than any of those guys but the fact remains that United has other gaps in their roster that they need to fill.

So I hope that rumour's wrong.
