Funny Boomers: Stankovic Cup in China

Here's the website where you can follow the progress of China, Argentina, Lithuania, Angola, Australia and Puerto Rico:

2005 Stankovic Continental Champions Cup

The Boomers flew out of Tokyo yesterday evening and play Argentina (Gold medallists at the last Olympics) today. Tough game first up!

A poll on the site rates the likely winners as Argentina, Lithuania or China. Australia is ahead of only Angola in the poll.

Here's Argentina's roster. They've got a couple of sizable players, including 210cm, 130kg Roman Gonzales. 130kg!

They're terming this competition as a "small world championship".

In the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, only three team have defeated the USA "dream team", they are Argentina, Puerto Rico and Lithuania, all of them will take part in the Stankovic Continental Champions Cup. Also we will have Asian champion China, African champion Angola and Oceanian champion Australia...

Entrance prices start at 50RMB (about AU$8-10 from memory) and range up to AU$800 for a VIP ticket to all 15 games.

Those prices are pretty damn good. Would be worth $800 for the VIP tickets.

Maybe the 6ers could actually implement tickets at $10 - $15 for some games.

Hey, can we call this the "Weird Al (Stankovic)" Cup and be done with it?

Heres a match report with Oscar getting a good mention:

An inexperienced Boomers line-up has completed 3-0 sweep of Japan in the Kirin Cup series with an 86-58 win in the final game.

Australia dominated Game Three in Tokyo, taking the lead with five minutes left in the first period and never looking back. The tourists led 21-12 at the first change and 49-23 at the main break.

Japan was more competitive in the second half but was still outscored by two points. Centre Oscar Forman top scored for Australia with 15 points, Alex Loughton scored 13 points while centre Wade Helliwell contributed 12 points.

The victory completes a successful series for the side after a close 69-65 win in the opener on Thursday and a 77-61 win at Omura in western Japan on Saturday.

Brian Goorjian's side now head to China for the Boris Stankovic Cup. The Boomers will face Argentina, Puerto Rico, Angola, Lithuania and China within five days of each other.

Boris was instrumental in FIBA contributing to basketball globally and is not chinese. There is a 90 minute time diff between adl and Beijing if you are looking at game times. They are being telecast in B. Dont know about a live scoreboard as the Japan games had.
