Staying up but as much to watch Serbia.

I don't hold much hope from what I have seen so far.

Hoping I'm wrong

Wow! 69-56 upset win!

Emus advance to quarter-finals after upset over Serbia (Includes links to replay and box score)

Leading the way for the Emus was Jack McVeigh with 18 points and 12 rebounds, whilst Dejan Vasiljevic and Kyle Clark both chipped in with 15 points apiece.

Great win, Turkey will be tougher but if we play like this well be in it up to our eyeballs.

WMW continues to impress, doing a great job at his first gig at this level and only just turned 17. Whats his height now btw, he towered over Glover whos listed at 6'3' and dint look much shorter then McVeigh when standing alongside him.

Must say the Serbs would have been very dissappointed in their efforts in this game, especially on their perimeter defence allowing us some open looks the Italians and Canadians didn't. We will live and die by our outside shooting, let's hope we can continue to move the ball around and hit those open shots.

It may turn out that Italy and Canada are both very stong teams - 3 teams from Group C now in the final 8. Could have been a tough pool.
Lost first 2 games by very small margins - Very thin line between losing and winning - get off the coach and teams back - it's not like they were smashed - you are talking one extra basket in each game - at this highest level.
Not so much the Serbs should be disappointed - maybe the Aussies are not as bad as some on this post would say!

Dejan proved in this game that he is limited to the SG position, his pick and roll game is non existent, he drives and has no options but to shoot a poorly balanced shot and then gets his chances to nail open 3 balls because he has a free license to do so. A very limited player outside the SG position with average defensive ability, not much speed and not much size beyond juniors. In a good team where his shooting is the key ingredient he can play at the next level, but anything beyond that is limited.

The game was a scrap fest, especially in that second half, both teams just fighting it out for loose balls and pressured shots or some how banging it in after the officials let it go for far too long. Poorly officiated game, but maybe just the thing that suited us more than them. Don't expect that kind of game against Turkey, to beat them we will have to play with more skill than guts!

I don't think being honest and reporting on what you see should be labelled as saying the Aussies are bad anon^^^ we should be able to say how it is shouldn't we?

Good to see we were able to establish some transition ball.

I fell asleep in the 4th but we were holding that double digit lead nicely.

Is McKay injured? He sat at the end of the bench for most of the Tunisia game and was a DNP for this one...

Great chance to make the final if they can keep that form up. Getting past Turkey will be tough but doable and if they do win the qtr final they'll likely meet Canada in the Semi with knowledge that they are thereabouts.

If they make the final of even the Semi's I reckon they'll have done exceptionally well for a team missing a lot of top end talent and relying on some bottom age guards. Caphorn may just be a future supercoach.

I predicted pre-tournament that a top 8 finish for the Emu's would be an awesome result, especially given their lack of height. They have now achieved that. The medal rounds are within sight now.

I still think the team would have been better off with Froling and possibly even Vague. We will now never know.

All quarter final games and beyond are now being streamed via FIBA's livebasketball.tv.

They are offering it for free.

That is a funny thing to say given that almost every other decent team in this tournament has 2-3-4 top players missing as well. Don't get me wrong, I want the Aussies to get to the final as much as the next person, but ease up with the supercoach tags there MELHOOPS, that is a silly thing to say based on one win against Serbia and still having to get past two very tough teams in Turkey and possibly Canada!

I just watched the replay. They really are a prototype Australian Basketball team; no stand outs, average - at best - athletic ability, but hustle, good ball movement, good execution and smarts. A team full of role players with a good opportunity for success as a team, but I wonder how bright their futures really are as individual players. I know it is early for these guys, but I am not seeing anyone who is screaming 'NBA prospect' as Mills and Bogut did by this stage.

Must admit, I missed this one, but also got to watch the replay. We gutsed it out didn't we...

Still quite a few indiviual attitudes towards their play for me, especially when we go to broken play or late in a shot clock.

I will agree that we have a team oriented role playing style of thing going on, but some of the individual stuff that goes on isn't coming off.

Some of the transition play in the first 3 quarters wasn't bad though, could see more of that for sure...

Serbia were poor, I am sure they will do some soul searching of their own after this. They missed some very gettable baskets, especially their post players who I feel let them down when it mattered.

So, against a better outfit we need to be more team oriented and get that extra pass out there and just stay confident IMHO...

Good luck to the team in the next round, I would love to see us down Turkey and get some revenge for the Boomers, that would be nice indeed!

As for NBA prospects, they need to show what they can do in college first. Certainly some NBL propsects though, so this is where I would focus rather than a less than 0.001% chance of an NBA contract.

I want the NBL to prosper, so we can get these young players coming through and playing in a top competition here first and foremost.

Oh, and WMW I believe is around 6' 4" tall or thereabouts, at least it appeared to be about that last time I stood next to him but he could be nudging 6' 5" by now, who knows...

They can grow fast these teenagers!

Does anyone think that w.whites mentality will make it hard for him to make it to the next level?

Seems a little lazy. Lacks drive and motivation?
Just look at his attitude compared to the other players when big plays happened.

Hooten and a hollering does not a prospect make. Nor is it an indication of motivation or laziness.

In fact your post maybe the longest bow drawn since Robin Hood was dominating the hardwood of Sherwood forest.

Who was the Aussie playing in skins that kept jacking up dumb 3s? He did his best to throw it away.

Kudos to Jack McVeigh. Quality game when needed!

Inspired effort by the TEAM and the coaches should also take some of the credit.

Serbia were being touted as possible Championship winners. So this is fantastic result.

But there's still a long way to go. Get past this next game and we're playing for a medal.

Great effort, considering all of the negative posts in the other two threads.

Looks like they've got their offence working better and not just relying on DJ to shoot 3's. Great game by Kyle Clarke. We just need another one or two to have a solid 3pt game to spread the opposition's defence which will open up the inside game as well.

Also, I believe McKay got injured early against Tunisia, a corked thigh. We were lucky we got this win without him as we had to do a lot of fouling in the key and Hunter fouled out with 6 minutes to go. So hopefully Mckay can get back on the court. His additional height and bulk will be required.

When you look at the game serbia didn't want to win the game. Australia took them out the game early and never got back into it. On the other hand love how you hate on Dejan Vasilijievic. Yes he may force some shots however he gets the job done. What about Tom Wilson with TO's or with Jack White always driving left. Don't hate on someone if you don't understand the role he plays. He took a charge and put his body on the Line for a loose ball. Think before you right about players because you don't know what the coach wants from them or what role they play.

Actually, if you look at the shooting chart and statistics, DJ took 19 attempts for his 6 makes, but most of them were mid range 2's, not as many 3's in this game as usual.

I think some criticism may be due to the times he drives into the arc and in stead of kicking it or dishing it he still jacks up the shot, which often ends up under pressure or off balance.

Now, we all know he can hit those too, but I guess when you look at the way we played in this game DJ could have made a few better decisions, I think he has that shooter's mentality though and coaches seem to let him thrive on it because he does get it done more often than not.

Agree with Abi^^ that Tom Wilson's game needs to lift if we are to take Turkey to the cleaners.

White, McVeigh and Clarke however were driving against Serbia all game and helped put them back on their heels a bit. Whether they did it well or not, they can develop those skills in college, but their efforts helped us get over the line in this game...

There's a difference between missing makeable shots and missing shots. Sometimes DJ crosses that line into throwing up shots that have almost no chance of dropping... Understand his role is to be aggressive and get the team out of some tight spots but he needs to tighten up the shot selection a little.

One thing I must say about the Aussies is that their man D is incredible. I don't know if it's someone teaching it in the AIS, or they've all just picked it up, but the way they stay in front of their man by moving their feet, and keep their arms outstretched to be in the passing lanes, but back a little bit to be out of foul trouble... it's amazing. I'd say containing their man is this teams number one strength.

@Greggo, I agree, we choked Serbia out of scoring in that final quarter with good D for sure. That said though, we will need additional help inside with McKay back to ensure we don't get hurt in the post should we continue defending this way.

Foul trouble on our bigs again will hurt us against a team with decent post players and I am sure our opposition is going to test us there...

It's that Delly type D of moving your feet, sticking your chest out, keeping your arms away and keeping in front you man. Lead by Tom Wilson, Jack White and Kyle Clark in this team.

Wonder if it's the work of an AIS coach?

^ 346. What a ridiculous statement. How about some credit where & when credit is due.

And, ^Abi ymois - you really think Serbia didn't want to win? Another ridiculous statement.

They'd be close to burning effigies of the coaches in Serbia for losing that game.

Also, DJ jacks up shots, that's what he does. Nothing that wrong with that. The coaches seem to let him get away with it too much though. For the benefit of the team I agree that a lot of times he'd be better passing it off and also passing it a lot earlier, that is if he ever passes it. As by the time he has to pass, everyone's covered. He needs to think best option, more like WMW & Wilson.

I'd be surprised if the D wasn't the influence of AC Tim Mallon. It's the same style he has been promoting with the NSWC men and the results there speak for themselves.. Just a thought.
