A great interview with Dejan Vasiljevic following the game against his native Serbia.

Defeating Serbia had another meaning for Australia's Dejan Vasiljevic

Considering you missed your 6 best players you can be proud that they made it so far. I'm turkish and I don't think we would have made it out of groups if we missed our 6 best players.
If you ask me, you might have the best talent in the world after the US. That is if guys like Ben Simmons, Thon Maker etc. actually play and don't sit out every tournament of course.

The Turkish players are just more skilled. Ultimately, Ben Simmons and co. will probably paper over the cracks/deficiencies in junior development in Australia.

The Turkish players in general were just much more comfortable on the ball. They had bigs with better ball-handling skills than our shooting guards and small forwards.

WMW might end up being a star, but does he have (or will he develop) the ball-handling skills and playmaking ability of the Turkish PG he was up against (No. 5, Ugurlu)?

Also you can criticize DJ all you want for his shot selection, but how many other players on the Australian team can actually get those shots off to begin with?

the future means that if you are under 6'5-6'6, you shouldn't even take up basketball if you want to make a living out of it.

A lot of teams will carry 4-5 7fters on there roster in the near future.

I remember the craze over a 6'8 women's basketballer who could dunk.
Now most countries have them at present or in the pipeline.

The game is changing so fast...
I remember when 30-35% 3 pt shooting was good. Good shooters now are between 45-50%.

wallace/Pirini
Tupaea/Seaton
Maley/sharp/horvat
Froling/smith/Dennis
Scherf/magbegor

Horvat and sharp are primarily sf's that can play the 2 if necessary although not too well.
Maley a better pf but plays the 3 mostly. Sometimes even at the 2.
Expect Wallace to play 1,2 and 3 aswell as Seaton and tupaea.
Froling, smith and magbegor to play 4 and 5 on occasions.
Pirini only at the 1.
Scherf only at the 5.
Dennis limited minutes at 4.

Some of you are so far off the mark it's not even funny. McVeigh will never go anywhere as SF, he is too small. If I had been coaching him he needs to be a PG or SG. He doesn't yet have that game & it remains to be seen if he ever will. Unless he does he won't even be a good player at NBL level.

To all you coaches out there. ALL your players, need to have ball handling skills & need to be a drop dead shooter. If you don't have that then you're going nowhere.

If anyone has followed DJ, and not just in these World Champs, you'd know he is a streaky shooter. But at least he won't die wondering.

I think Caporn & the coaches would acknowledge they lost a lot with losing Wilson tonight.

Early word is he's got a fractured leg.

Yes he needs to put on some muscle(size)...
But, how is that too small?

DJ may be a streaky shooter however how many games has we won by shooting and even though he misses he keeps shooting. Shooters mentality! Apparently he went 9-28 in a competition down in Australia however he led the team to a W. Just saying you might want to watch a bit of his games, no support behind him and has helped the Emus get where they are.

mcviegh is not small he is 6'8 and can play the SF and could develop towards SG.

His moves at these championships towards the basket have been great (like a young newley). his got 4 years at college to work on his body (size & strength) and his shooting (particularly 3point).

he will be very good

Some time in the weight room... He could easily get to 230.

That's a descent sized sf in my books. Maybe not Lebron 6'8 260+
But..
Barnes is listed at 6'8 225.
Leonard 6'7 230.
George is 6'9 220.
Gay 6'8 230.
Hayward is 6'8 225.

Reply #535627 | Report this post

Mate whatever YOUR beef is with Antoniadou suggest YOU give it a rest as your certainly on your own and making a fool of yourself
you clearly know nothing, this kid was never marketed by anyone
Especially not to Florida state from what I've been told by people that actually do know her well(former coaches)they came on board when she was visiting USA just like Wallace with Baylor and Wallace ain't doing too bag coming off the bench as a freshman so suggest you get back in your lonely box ( you've been told !!!!!! Haha)

Now Back on topic .......shame the boys lucked out Tom Wilson-getting injured clearly didn't help their chances of getting that win but also missing some very strong players who are already in the college system left Australia vulnerable .
Again you have to think if players like Simmons and Humfries etc had been available a medal would have been a definiite chance in my books
And the trend especially with the boys of going to highschool to improve their chances of a good college pick up is going to hurt Australia in their junior ranks at international level if they all start to follow this path in the future
BA probably need to take a good look at this , recruiters are starting to hit the Aussies hard which is a combination of good marketing and high schools and colleges seeing a talent pool that has not been so well informed on either side of the world until the last few years. Bogut Mills and now Delly all in quick succession have sparked the attention for the boys , don't know about the girls as you never hear of any going the highschool route first , but with the likes of Wallace ,Smith and yes Antoniadou all at top ten Div1 schools and the Frolings stamping their mark at SMU plus the likes of Pannossis and Barr who kill it in their respective teams I'd expect to see a lot more choosing college over their Aussie commitments.
BA may need to work on ways to keep these good kids in the system for the future.

Anon^ do you know the school holiday periods in the US? College holidays are mid May to Mid August and some of the girls are in college, yet they are also playing with the Gems. The US High school system is also on holidays in June-July, so maybe ask the question why they don't make themselves available?

Because by my reckoning they are available, there must be other reasons! Also, this Emu side left some decent talent behind in AUS, so also ask a question regarding team selection if you like?

We picked a side, it wasn't a bad side but they were not playing to their potential in the positions they play their best, so we lost. Time to regroup and analyse what they learned and how we can improve for the future, US school system is not an issue, you are barking up the wrong tree!

It's too late. He will get his chance in 2 years as he'll still be eligible.

^ I think the boys that were already in college would've made themselves available, as McKay did. I think the issue is the ones that are yet to go to college are the issue, with thhe exception of Jonah Bolden.

If they go to worlds they play in a very structured system and it is hard for them to stand out. And if they don't standout against the world's best they hurt their profile and their stocks could go down, or that's the perception.

Having said that it didn't hurt Bogut or Exum. They both went to U19 worlds.

So, our Emu men wound it up in 7th place and the USA had to get over Serbia in O/T to win gold by about 8 points or something like that.

We had a young side and should be better for the experience in two years time. Watching the highlights from the final, there were some nice dunks in there, always a great game in recent years just a shame we couldn't crack it this time...

We should be proud of the boys and their efforts, they had some injury concerns but worked really hard for one another, showing some true Aussie gritt at times.

Now upon reflection, since we defeated the Serbs in an earlier qualifying game, one must ask the question did Serbia throw that game to avoid the USA until the final, or did we just play our best game against them?

They looked like a different outfit to the one which we played, could they have been planning this all along?
