Alex Pledger on track to play NBL opening round

Vickerman is doing it tough through the pre-season with three frontliners out of action. Corey Webster is over trying to make the New Orleans Pelicans roster in the NBA, Tom Abercrombie is nursing a hamstring strain and Pledger is still on light duties as he works back from off-season surgery on his foot.

But Vickerman, who has included two development players and a temporary replacement in his squad for this week's Blitz tournament in Townsville, confirmed there were high hopes the 2.15m Pledger would be ready to play some part in the opening round of the regular season which starts with an October 7 visit to Adelaide.

"It's moved forward from where it was -- we thought we might miss him for a fair bit of October," Vickerman said after practice on Monday. "He's on track to play in the first round, whether that be on the road (against the 36ers) or at home (on October 11 against Townsville). We expect him to practise when we get back from Townsville."

Finally some good news for NZ.

It will no doubt take him a while to get match fit but I can't wait to see the big guy running without restriction again. Fit and healthy he's a menace at both ends of the floor.
