Gees Wagstaff looks like he has done a ankle or a knee. Not a good sign.Anyhow what standsout for me is the Cats perimeter game of the lack of it. It looks horrid when the Taipans are downright giving the Cats all the open looks in the world and they cant hit anything.

Beal and Prather are going to have a huge years respectively on the perimter as the primary playmaker because Kenny and others cant do anything off the dribble. The defence has been the positive. Prather, Damo and Beal are going to hound teams into turnovers with a lot of press defence.

I think if you press play then pause it - you might be able to watch it later.

We won't find out if the games are available on demand until after the cats game.

Perth are going to really struggle scoring this year - even with Beal I think. No shooting to compliment their size. They definitely got Prather around having Greenwood but had no option due to him leaving late. However was impressed their d.

Not too sure about Cairns. Starks looked good but the turnovers are a concern. Their frontcourt is good but could almost be considered too deep I think.

To stay in it without Damo, Beal and Wagstaff (missed the second half) was pleasing. Perth Defence will probably be in the top 2 or 3 at worst this season(I think ill be this best defence in the league) but shooting is going to be an ongoing issue. Have to get Knight more midrange shots and Redhage along with Beal better designed plays for better looks on the perimeter..

All in all without the starting backcourt and the teams best scorer and playmaker in Beal and the best defensive player in the league in Damo I saw a lot of positives despite the loss.Jawai will get better with more minutes and minutes to get fitter.

I'm not fussed by the loss or how the Cats shot the ball. You can see the significant improvement from the game against the Kings.

Has there been a single completely healthy team play tonight? It is hard to judge the long term prospects of these teams when they are missing key players.

As for Charles Jackson, it is a bit early to say, but when you're being abused by schensher, you should probably get your bags packed just in case.

I am not sure why Boti sold these commentators as great. I find them a bit painful to listen to. I am not sure that Carfino was worse than this.

As for presentation, I think any basketball looks second rate when played in local recreation centres. There has been some decent basketball played, but it isn't all that appealing on screen right now, and I would hate if this was the first taste of the league someone out there is getting.

If they let Jackson go and Webster makes the grade, they could always go after a gun import scorer in back court and sign a back up big. Casey Frank. Luke Nevill might be after a job.

Keep in mind they are non-professional commentators. They certainly aren't bad, they just aren't the professional level of John Casey etc.

Boti is right though, one of the commentators, despite being a massive Kings fan (including wearing a Kings polo in tonight's coverage), doesn't actually display his bias through his commentary. Considering most non-professional (and plenty of professional) commentators display their biases, this guy gets respect.

I'm actually looking forward to who Fox Sports has on their commentary team for this year. If perhaps the NBL manages to be on Network Ten (OneHD) for the Wednesday night game, then maybe, hopefully, we'll see:

Anchor commentators: John Casey, Anthony Hudson, Dwayne Russell & Lachy Reid

Specialist Commentators: Andrew Gaze, Shane Heal, Brett Maher

Sideline commentators: Melissa Marsh & the other girl who did it for Channel Ten - forgot her name, oops.

--

And yes, the Blitz looks shoddy at the Townsville RSL. Doesn't really matter too much though, the main thing is the Crocodiles are returning to the Swamp!

Heal's coaching a WNBL team, and I can't imagine Ten getting to simulcast a game will affect anything in terms of commentary so Reid won't be involved.

I didn't think Mel Marsh was at all good as a sideline commentator. She did well on colour, but any time she was having to do an interview or give a pre-scripted speech it just got awkward. Michelle Trewartha was the other woman you were thinking of.

No big loss to be honest. Only problem is - I can't think of any other possible options outside of the NBL TV people (i'm not sure i'd promote them though). I don't mind Rupert Sapwell as a notable exception and maybe Neil Cross (although as an anchor).

Apparently Lachy Reid is/was doing Netball coverage for Fox which have a similar situation if that changes anything...

Pretty average slate of games last night with all the various players missing last night.

Perth looked about what I expected - some good high-low stuff as usual, but really struggled to score at times. Guys like Hire/Wagstaff/Kenny are really going to have to hit their open shots this year.

Starks alternated between Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde each possession for Cairns. Looks like he has a nice touch from midrange out to three, but needs to tone down the tendancy to drive into traffic, and had a bad handling errors. But hey, that's every young import PG.

Cairns were at full strength last night
Starks impressed for the first time
Worthington was very good as usual
Gliddon showed his class in the 2nd half

Perth really missed the def intensity of Martin and the scoring of Beal. Prather was in the position that Beal would normally be and you can tell he isnt an outside threat. Open floor he is legit tho.

Cedric Jackson is a flat out superstar! He was on another level. Wesley was good too. Shae Ili and Shane MacDonald were great little spark plugs off the bench too.

The front court of Kay, Schenscher and Young looked great last night. Throw in Conklin and they have a pretty hungry crew. Tough! Maynard tried really hard but had to shoulder a lot of the ball handling. Steindl tried too hard last night and struggled. Its a big season for him.

How does the Premiership points work?

Reply #551030 | Report this post

IIRC, 1 point for winning each quarter (0.5 points for splitting), 3 points for winning the game.

A team gets a minimum 4 and maximum 7 points for a win.

Considering the crocs had their number one and two point guards out and Conklin, I thought they played pretty well. Kay was great again and is definately a front runner for roty, they desperately needed someone who could hit a big shot down the stretch but hopefully Conklin and jett will help there.

Outside shooting continues to be a question mark, I expect Steindl to be given little space all year and will need others to step up from outside. Djeric could have an opportunity this year, as I seem him as the only other guy with a shooters mentality and the ability to get hot from outside.

It would be nice if there were highlights or any video at all posted on the NBL or Foxsports website for those who missed it. I understand they may make replays of the live streams available later on, but surely there's value in posting highlights for fans/casual fans to watch, like the Jawai block I heard about, or the dunks/missed dunks.

^highlights won't show missed dunks tho.

It would be great if there was a "recap" version kinda like the version they offer on NBA League Pass.

The wildcats video crew are down there doing their own highlights of the game. Check their facebook page for Wildcats only highlights.

Prather's missed dunk in the open court would have been spectacular. Loved the way he took off and leaned in. Not enough players lean in on their dunks any more! Thanks Lebron!
