Very good observations.
When the 3 ball isn't working for them, they need be able to recognise that and revert to different sets. They did this in the 2nd qtr against the Kings when Goulding ran the point. I'm not sure why they didn't go back to this in the 2nd half when they couldn't get going.

Recently, United’s defense has dropped off significantly. They dropped three places, and are now the league’s 5th best defense, giving up 110.2 points per 100 possessions. It’s a major difference, and the stats back this up too.
