USA is tough
Russia have superior front court.
Spain are always highly skilled.
France have a couple of decent players.
China are huge inside.

We are going to finish 3rd or 4th IMO.

If she wasn't injured, there's something really seedy going on.

She's easily in th top 3 and has had a great seabl season.

With vadeeva and musina out of Russian team, I don't understand why they would bring 4 bigs plus 3 other forwards who have been playing pf at international level.

Magbegor, Mcspadden, Aokuso, Pizzey +
Bibby, Maley and Rowe who have all played pf for u17 and u18 teams and are better suited there.

Butler and MCaughttry neither are successful winning coaches, and don't look at the Un20s for Vic, that's always an easy win for Vic , though must say the first year MAughtry had the Un20 women, Vic looked vulnerable for the first time ever in a few games.
Butlers BigV side has hardly won one game in SCW either.

Think they are putting to much hope on that UN17 worlds side, yes they did fabulously well, but it was also recorded as one of the worst selected USA teams ever.
UN17 were all high school kids, not yet blooded into the senior levels, unlike most of the Aussie girls , UN19s takes it up a few notches .

If they do well it won't be because of this coaching staff,

Simmons would have been on the team imo if she wasn't injured.

I wonder what Horvat was told? You're a better scorer, rebounder, defender, bigger, stronger, quicker, more athletic than those in your position. Oh.. and your shooting your ft's at 85%.
but you didn't perform well the last 2 days. Sorry kid...

Think it's the usual not what you know but who you know coming into play, people should never ever be surprised in Aussie basketball, it's a very small circle, you really only need to scratch the surface to join the dots of connections.

Horvats probably lost that connection now Joyce has departed...... Mayley and Horvat play the same spot don't they.

Maley listed as a guard with Oregon, Horvat a guard at Ucla before they've started there freshman year.

Both are really small forwards.
Maley would be better as a small pf imo with her ability to bring down the boards.
Dribbling and perimeter defense are not her thing atm imo. Gets into foul trouble a lot.

Males isca tenacious rebounder but also gets in the way of the bigs also rebounding, watched her a couple of time recently at Dande and she literally takes the rebounded ball out of the hands of Sherf and anyone else, which frequently results in a turnover of the ball.

Same thing happened with last UN19 team from memory a guard was left out that should have been in the team , her defence along might ha e got them the silver rather than the bronze

It comes down to coaches personal preferences if it's between two similar players , some coaches just get hung up on certain players

Nothing you can do about that apart from move on and prove them wrong

Un20 Vic are a certainty to win every year, both Butler and McAughtry have had that group last couple of years, their first year saw Vic challenged for the first time in a few games in that age group because of poor coaching choices

Neither are national calibre coaches let alone international level.

Not taking anything away from other players selected, but she should be in that team.

No Horvat through omission, no Simmons and Cochrane through injury leaves some very big holes in this squad.

There's a few girls in there very low in skill and basketball IQ that will struggle against the better teams.

Cubillo and Pizzey should not be in that team.
Not to take anything away from them, but they are not the best available.

COE has to make sure they go. The only ones not chosen are the ones who will get a second shot at u19s in 2019.

I'm certain theirs more to this story...
You can't be a captain and best performer at oceanias just 7 months ago, win u20 ajc and then also be in amazing form in the seabl against experienced women averaging 15 pts, 6 rbds, 86ft% for her not make a team where she is easily a top 3 player.

Goriss would have never had her as an emergency...
I would like to know what butler has to say about it.

I agree that McAughtry has been proven to be no good, lasted a month in his most recent attempt at head coach in NZ. To be fair to Dee Butler though, she's a former player who is now giving back by coaching, which we need more of, and she put her hand up to be an AC, has been forced to step up and take the HC role because Goriss has moved up.

Good luck to her and the team, hope they do well. Would've liked to see a Carrie Graf or Michele Timms as her mentor rather than another geriatric man in Phil Brown. If they were going to go old school male, they should've got the best Aus juniors coach, Ray Tomlinson.

as for the coach Butler is not ready for this role, great she wants to give back but just like playing she needs time to develop, not handed a plum role like this, AMc needs to retire from coaching, if hes not developed by now he is never ever going to

They took 4 bigs so they could play bigger in the front court.

6'1 Bibby
6'3 Aokuso
6'4 Magbegor

5'6 Rocci
6'1 Simons

5'3 Cubillo

Had to take extra bigs as they are poor defensively.

Magbebgor is an active defender but often gets into foul trouble early trying to swat, McSpadden is a desperation selection, Aokuso defensively poor, Bibby not much chop on D and so on.

"Selection was not easy with the quality of the squad but we are really excited about the depth and versatility of the team," said Butler.

“The team has a wealth of experience underpinned by their development at the CoE through their state based High Performance programs while some have previous World Championship involvement.”

So from all appearances CoE > on form Captain?

I know it's a junior team, but it really feels like the omission is a bigger story than we've had reported. Even PnR barely covered her missing.

Bibby, Maley, Conti and Horvat and they can only take 3.
Conti was a lock because of her position.

COE is a program for the purpose of Aus representation.
The current Coe players were always going to get the nod over the others.
Left with 3 forward options in which they could only take 2, they chose Bibby and Maley,

The COE really ain't that grand. better options available now and you don't have to be there for years to get the same results.
