Dallas Wings waive Erin Phillips

"That is definitely a huge surprise," Wings guard Skylar Diggins-Smith told local US media.

“Erin is somebody who has been in this league for a long time. Two-time champion, somebody that I have so much respect for as a woman and as an athlete.”

Phillips, a nine-year WNBA veteran, joined the Wings ahead of the 2016 season in a trade with the Los Angeles Sparks. She averaged 4.7 points and 1.2 assists in 32 games and 12 starts for the Wings last season.

I'm a bit surprised too.

They saw her getting banged up in AFLW. The rest is history.

Unfortunately, this was a risk choosing to play AFLW. She'll get a gig somewhere else. IMO she is will only be better after her very short AFL season.

I doubt it has anything to do with her playing AFL

While Phillips, 31, is not free to discuss her situation until she comes off waivers - giving other WNBA clubs a chance to swoop on the multi-talented combo guard - she confided it was a good decision moving forward.

Erin OK with Dallas decision

AFLW star Erin Phillips retires from WNBA, keeps Australian Opals door open

Dual sports star Erin Phillips will turn more of her attention to her AFLW career but remain available for the Australian Opals after announcing her retirement from the WNBA.
Phillips announced her retirement on Sunday after being waived by the Dallas Wings on May 10. Other clubs had several days to sign her but didn't, so Phillips has called time on her US career.

An almost 32 year old 5'8 SG. Sadly, I think shes probably done at international level.

When you look at the ability and experience of our other guards I think we need to keep Erin as an option.

She was average in Rio, barely played since then & doesn't appear likely to do so before the next AFLW season. She's done for the Opals.

As an option maybe...

Need to see what these girls can do in the guard spots.

PG Mansfield/Clydesdale/Lavey
SG Cumming/Cole/Wallace

Will be hard to keep her involved in the Opals if she is no longer playing basketball.

She hasn't ruled out playing elsewhere, just retired from WNBA.

"She hasn't ruled out playing elsewhere, just retired from WNBA."

The Adelaide press release says she'll be back with the Crows in November. If she's not playing in the WNBA, where would she be playing any reasonable standard of basketball?

Too slow for today's game.

Look at almost every young guard in the wnba right now, speedy...

Today's games you had loyd, Boyd, sims, Clarendon ect etc
Tomorrow diggins, Robinson etc etc

AFLW must be pathetic if an old and slow Erin dominates in it.

It wasn't her speed that got her MVP.

how on earth can she still hope to be part of the Opals playing group when shes not going to be playing basketball, bit rich really. Time to let the young guns have a go now I think

Brondello knows Europe quite well and Hurst has been playing well over there for the last few years. Could be an option for a veteran pg. Kind of like bringing in Tully late in her career.

It's the asia cup, we need to be developing young players in this tournament.
We only need to be top 4 to qualify for next years World Cup.

Make top 4 from...division A
Australia, nz, china, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Phillipines, Chinese Taipei.

Likely australia, Japan, china and nz will go on through.

IMO
Mansfield/Clydesdale/Lavey
Cole/Cumming
Ohea/Jarry
Griffin/Blicavs/Mijovic
Cambage/Bunton

No one older than 30.

Perhaps the Lightning and Crows itinerary don't allow her

If I was a new coach I would take the strongest team possible to any qualifying tournament, regardless of age.

She's been given a role in the Dallas Wings front office so it appears she won't be available for anything other than that during the WNBA season.

Looks like she spat her dummy out and then put it back in.
