Lol, who selects these squads?

I thought 2 girls and 1 boy would certainly make the final team. Not even on the list.

Well done to the kids that have made it this far. To those that didn't - unlucky o miss out, don't give up as there are many who have seen you play, and truely believe that your time will come. Patience.

Basketball going down hill? Get out from under your rock, it's actually starting to really boom again! Australia has had great players over the last few years NBA wise, and now the NBL is picking up, juniors are getting more college offers than ever and we are climbing the world rankings at an alarming rate.

Don't get upset if your kid doesn't make it, it's only u/16's. Nathan sobey didn't even make a state team and he played NBA Summer League this year. Focus on the things you can control as a parent, be supportive and teach the kids to stay determined to improve.

Climbing the world rankings at an alarming rate?
The exact opposite unfortunately.

An u17 world championship only gives you 50 pts.
Asia champs, Oceania champs give you very little in comparison to eurobasket and americups.

Men are 10th, up from 11th after Olympics 4th place.

Women are 5th, dropping 2 spots after Olympic 5th place.
Potentially drop another spot after Asia cup loss and a poor worlds in 2018.

Boys are 10th, up one spot. Will drop 1-2 of spots after not qualifying for u19 worlds.

Girls are 7th, even after winning u17 worlds. We are behind Brazil who hasn't played in 1.5 years, Russia who have been dismal at u17 level and Canada also.
Japan's 4th place at u19s and a win at u16 level may see them overtake Aus and push us back to 8th

Add them all up and we are a combined 5th in the world.

At the end of the year we will drop one spot to 6th. Canadas u19 gold boys, u19 bronze women's, 2 u16 silvers and 2 likey americup victorys will see them overtake us.

I agree with #090, and #098, I assume MS and ST are the 2 Vic Met '01 kids you're referring to, in which case I agree with that as well. I think SAC has two '01 kids, the guard and the big, who I'm surprised to see missing from the squad, though not sure either would have made the final team.

The six boys who I think are the most obvious selections are all there, but if you played the other 12 invited against 12 who missed out, I think it would be a very close game.

And I'm not a parent, but thanks for your constructive participation #140!

The boys will have a much tougher competition as the tournament has 16 teams compared to only 8 in the girls.

That's because they were all bottom agers.

The Asian champs are for players born 01 and 02

The players for u16 qld n and s last month were better than those in u18s this year or u16s last year?

Interesting that the boys squad will be in the middle of the pack in terms of height.

China, Korea, Phillipines and the middle eastern countries are all bigger than us.

I think they should have tryouts also.

Bring in a 20 player camp and have the best 4 in Each position.
Let them go head to head in a different environment under the Australian coaches system not the state coaches.

The process is flawed, BA developes great players and they make state teams but are not considered.
I could put some of them against the current squad and they would smash them.
It shows that the selectors have no idea of the talent that is available. That's why tryouts.
We all have ideas but some of the selections listed for the team mean that they also have no idea.

At the end of the day it's junior sports, so nothing is perfect with selections. It's not like they have an army of NBA calibre scouts across the nation watching. Remember we are a large country area wise.

18 players down to 12.

They should be taking more than that into camp these days.
Around 30 for a country our size.

Hopefully it changes before next years worlds.

Caught me, I'm a parent.
My kid is the best in the world and everyone else is beneath him/her
He or she is a combination of Jordan, Lebron, Curry.
Don't need a camp of 18. Just send my son/daughter by his/herself and he/she will bring the gold home.

Reply #642346 | Report this post

Yeah. I'm dirty my 10 year old didn't make it. Could have at least been invited to a camp. My kid is better than all the kids selected - or at least the potential to be. Should have been selected on potential as per other recent junior Australian teams.
As a parent, as with other parents, we have watched a s..t load of basketball. So respect the fact that we may know a bit about the subject. We have seen a lot of these kids play. I would suggest that any parent posting here would only wish all of these kids every success. We do however have the right to express our disappointment in the process, and we have the right to challenge.
Perhaps the people posting who can't wait to out a parent of a kid who missed out, is the parent of the kid who in a transparent process, may have missed out.
I can name a few kids in the squad who aren't even the best kid in their club team let alone state team. I can also name a few kids who would whip the arse of a kid who has made it. But that is not the problem. The process is the problem.
Good luck to these kids. Hope they prove us all wrong.
(I must admit my 10 year old is probably one to two years away from this team);)
